Book Description
The initial purpose of this experiment was to provide a consistent data base of neutron-induced gamma-ray production cross sections over a large energy range for use in estimating elemental composition of the martian surface by observing gamma rays produced by cosmic ray interactions on the planet's surface [Bo02]. However, these data should be useful for other projects such as oil-well logging, accelerator transmutation of nuclear waste, shielding calculations, gamma-ray heating for nuclear reactors and verification of nuclear model calculations and databases. The goal of the measurements was to collect data on the strongest gamma rays from many samples of interest. Because of the available beam time this meant that many of the measurcments were rather short. Despite the short running time the large samples used and the good beam intensity resulted in very satisfactory results. The samples, chosen mainly as common constituents of rock and soil and measured in the same few week period, include: B &, BN, C, Al, Mg, Si, S, Cay Ti, Cr, Mn, and Fe. Be was also used as a neutron scatterer that only produces one gamma ray (478 keV from 7Li) with appreciable intensity. Thus Be can serve as a measure of neutron-induced backgrounds. In this first paper we present results for Fe.

Book Description
The Linac time-of-flight technique has been used to measure the differential gamma-ray production cross sections for neutron interactions with natural Fe and Al in the neutron energy range 0.9 to 17 MeV. Ring-shaped scattering samples were placed at the terminus of a 51-meter neutron flight path at the Gulf Radiation Technology Linac facility. The gamma rays from (n, x gamma) reactions were detected with an 80-cc Ge(Li) detector placed on the centerline of the flight path so as to observe gamma rays emitted from the samples at an angle of about 125 degrees with respect to the incident neutron beam. This angle minimized the effect of gamma-ray anisotropy on the determination of the angle-integrated cross section. (Author).

Book Description
Values of the gamma-ray production cross sections for neutron interactions with iron as reported by previous investigators have differed by as much as a factor of 1.5 or more at neutron energies greater than about 5 MeV. Because of this discrepancy, the measurements were repeated at ORNL using the ORELA as a pulsed source of neutrons with energies between 850 keV and 20 MeV. The data were obtained using a NaI(Tl) gamma-ray spectrometer oriented at an angle of 125° to the incident neutron beam. The sample was positioned in the beam at a distance of 47.35 meters from the neutron source. The resulting data, presented as differential cross sections (d2sigma/d.cap omega.dE) for gamma rays between 0.7 and 10.5 MeV, show good agreement with some previously published data, but are significantly different from previous ORNL measurements for neutron energies greater than 5 MeV.

Book Description
The gamma rays resulting from (n, n' gamma ray) interactions of 2.8 MeV neutrons with the nuclei of the elements magnesium, aluminum, silicon, titanium and iron have been investigated. Cross sections for the production of many of these gamma rays are reported. The most important gamma ray from each element is found to have the following elemental production cross section in millibarns per steradian at 90 = 20 deg: 1.37 MeV gamma ray from Mg, 35.2 = 4.0; 1.01 MeV gamma ray from Al, 19.8 = 2.2; 1.78 MeV gamma ray from Si, 41.0 = 4.9; 0.99 MeV gamma ray from Ti, 74.0 = 9.0; and 0.85 MeV gamma ray from Fe, 96.5 = 11.5. Further, it is shown that a correlation appears to exist between the reduced quadrupole transition probability of a nuclear state and the excitation of that state by neutron inelastic scattering.
