Post-irradiation Examination Techniques for Research Reactor Fuels
Author: IAEA
Publisher: International Atomic Energy Agency
ISBN: 920102021X
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 149
Book Description
Post-irradiation examination (PIE) is an indispensable step in the selection of new or improved research reactor fuel, and in the characterization and understanding of its in-core behaviour. This publication provides an introduction to PIE techniques. It describes a typical PIE process from intercycle inspections in the reactor pool or channel, to hot cell PIE, which is subdivided into non-destructive and destructive testing techniques with their typical output, advantages and drawbacks, and their applicability to understanding fuel irradiation behaviour. Much of the work presented in this publication originated from the research and development of new low enriched uranium research reactor fuels. Intended readers include research reactor operators, regulators and their technical support organizations, fuel developers and manufacturers, laboratory staff, and policy makers.

Handbook of Prompt Gamma Activation Analysis
Author: G. Molnar
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 0387233598
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 448
Book Description
Prompt gamma activation analysis (PGAA) is a unique, non-destructive nuclear analytical method with multi-element capabilities. It is most effective if intense neutron beams (especially cold beams) of nuclear reactors are used to induce the prompt gamma radiation. Based largely on the authors' pioneering research in cold neutron PGAA, the handbook describes the methodology in self-contained manner and reviews recent applications. The library of prompt gamma ray data and spectra for all natural elements is a unique aid to the practitioner. The level is understandable by a broad audience, which facilitates teaching and training. The Handbook of Prompt Gamma Activation Analysis is a comprehensive handbook written for those practising the method, wanting to implement it at a reactor facility, or just looking for a powerful non-destructive method of element analysis. The book is also useful for nuclear physics, chemistry and engineering scientists, scholars and graduate students interested in neutron-induced gamma ray spectroscopy and nuclear analytical methods.

Nondestructive Analyses of Irradiated Mitr Fuel by Gamma-ray Spectroscopy
Author: Jerry Alois Sovka
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Gamma ray spectrometry
Languages : en
Pages : 266
Book Description
Lithium drifted Ge solid state gamma ray detectors were developed and applied to the problem of nondestructive analysis of spent reactor fuel. The energy resolution of the detector was better than 1% (FWHM) in the 600 to 800 keV range and made possible the identification of gamma rays from Co-134, Cs-137, Rh-106, Nb-95, and Zr-95 in this energy region. Ratios of intensities of these gamma rays were used to determine average flux and irradiation time of the fuel. The burnup was then calculated. Results of these measurements agreed with other independent measurements well within the 10% error assigned. The technique developed provides a useful method for determining the irradiation history of spent reactor fuel that has been operated at low enough temperatures so that fission product migration has not taken place. (Author).

Book Description
Nondestructive gamma-ray and neutron techniques were used to characterize the irradiation exposures of irradiated fuel assemblies. Techniques for the rapid measurement of the axial-activity profiles of fuel assemblies have been developed using ion chambers and Be(.gamma., n) detectors. Detailed measurements using high-resolution gamma-ray spectrometry and passive neutron techniques were correlated with operator-declared values of cooling times and burnup.

Characterization and Testing of Materials for Nuclear Reactors
Author: International Atomic Energy Agency
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 158
Book Description
Industrial growth, energy consumption are seen as measures towards economic developments. With increase in industrial development worldwide, the demand of energy is continually on the rise. Today, the energy industry is facing many challenges. Nuclear fission and nuclear fusion are seen as important future energy sources. Development of innovative reactor designs with large efficiency for fuel burn up is one of the needs of fission reactors. The materials resistant to high dose of radiations in fusion reactors is another major challenge. The production of electricity without global warming is an important pressing demand on the energy sector. The demands on quality control of components for nuclear and heavy industry are very stringent. Development of well characterized, high quality materials is therefore essential for safe, efficient and reliable operation of engineering components. The diagnosis of failure of machinery parts comes from the post operational characterization of materials. Various destructive and non-destructive techniques are used for this purpose. Research reactors have played an important role in non-destructive characterization of materials and have contributed to technology development. This publication focuses on characterization of materials for industries in general and nuclear energy sector in particular. The main focus is on research reactor based techniques with some discussion on other allied methods like positron annihilation.--Publisher's description.
