Book Description
In 1903, the Grayson Real Estate Company was formed, land was purchased, and the community of Galax became a reality. The advantage of having the Norfolk and Western Railroad passing through town gave the young southern community the opportunity to grow and expand during the 20th century. Located on a high valley-like plateau in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains, its downtown district is listed on the Virginia Landmarks Register and the National Register of Historic Places. The town is surrounded by rolling swells of grassy hills and well-kept farms, while the Chestnut Creek meanders slowly through the heart of the town with the New River and the Blue Ridge Parkway nearby. A collection of old, treasured photographs provide a glimpse of the town's first 50 years and of its citizens, their lives, homes, stores, and activities.

Galax (Galax Urceolata)
Author: Mary Lorraine Predny

Category : Beetleweed
Languages : en
Pages : 52
Book Description
Galax (Galax urceolata) is an evergreen groundcover harvested for use in the floral industry. The plants durable, shiny green leaves turn red in the fall and are popular background foliage in floral arrangements. People living in the mountains of North Carolina and other rural Appalachian locations have harvested (pulled) galax to supplement their incomes since before the 20th century; however, over the last decade, Hispanic laborers have largely displaced local harvesters. Today, more than 90 percent of the harvesters are of Hispanic origin. An experienced harvester can pull approximately 5,000 leaves a day; the value of this amount can range from $20 to $120. Prices vary depending on the season, the size and color of the leaves, and market demand. Industry concern for the availability or sustainability of galax has prompted the USDA Forest Service to restrict the harvest season. Since 2001, no harvesting is allowed from May 1 through June 15 when new leaves are emerging. The USDA Forest Service and the National Park Service are both conducting research to determine sustainable harvest levels.

The Galax Gatherers
Author: Edward Owings Guerrant
Publisher: Univ. of Tennessee Press
ISBN: 9781572333635
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 268
Book Description
"Mark Huddle's introduction to this edition places both Guerrant and his writing within a broader context of dramatic changes in American Protestantism at the end of the nineteenth century. He argues that the complex interactions between the inhabitants of the region and various home missions defy simplistic generalizations about religion and the perception of cultural isolation in Appalachia. The republication of this work promises to reignite debates over Appalachia's unique place in the history of the nation as a whole."--BOOK JACKET.
