Book Description
The major focus of this project is urban plaza design and the redesigning of Gainesville0́9s downtown plaza. The Gainesville CRA (Community Redevelopment Agency) and the city of Gainesville have determined the plaza to be an unhealthy space and the nature of the site is decreasing the quality of the downtown experience. The city of Gainesville and the CRA previously hosted a design competition with landscape architect firms Dix Lathrop of Longwood, FL and Carol Johnson of Boston, MA. Both firms produced outstanding design plans however the city has determined that major construction changes might be suitable in the future. At this time the City of Gainesville has decided to make contextual changes to the downtown Gainesville areas such as Depot Park, 2nd St. Corridor, Main Street Planning and the Porter Neighborhood. These type of changes will harness a successful urban plaza for downtown Gainesville in the future. Currently the existing Bethel Station is being renovated to become a lunch cafe and to bring the business crowd into the plaza during lunch time hours. This will greatly increase the amount of people visiting the plaza and increase the tax base for the area.

Book Description
The primary purpose of this study was to evaluate the Bo Diddley Community Plaza in Downtown Gainesville, Florida, and offer suggestions for redesign. A case-study approach was used in establishing the key elements of urban plaza design in which a cross-sectional analysis using behavioral mapping, as outlined by Ittelson, was used to evaluate the plaza. It was observed that pedestrian traffic throughout the Bo Diddley Community Plaza left much to be desired. This could be attributed to the clear lack of enclosure about the plaza, a deficiency in seating areas, and the established territoriality of the residing homeless population. Suggestions were made to improve the sight lines and perceived safety of the plaza, add dynamic seating elements, and create an overall inspired sense of place that will, in turn, draw the much needed pedestrian traffic to the community plaza and surrounding Downtown Gainesville area.
