Examines methods used by hospitals in southeastern Pennsylvania to engage in corporate fundraising. Methodologies include a literature review, key informant interviews with directors of local hospital foundations, and a survey of hospital foundations. Finds that hospitals rely more heavily on corporate giving than do other charitable organizations. While corporate solicitation is active, very little strategic planning is done. Recommends that hospital foundations undertake corporate fundraising in a strategic manner: Categorize corporations as hospital vendors, corporations with an established relationship, and corporations without a relationship; determine which corporations will be asked to give to special events, annual fund, etc.; solicit first by phone, then by follow-up letter or meeting; and keep records of success rates.
