Book Description
Combining both classical and current methods of analysis, this text present discussions on the application of functional analytic methods in partial differential equations. It furnishes a simplified, self-contained proof of Agmon-Douglis-Niremberg's Lp-estimates for boundary value problems, using the theory of singular integrals and the Hilbert transform.

Book Description
This encyclopedic work covers the whole area of Partial Differential Equations - of the elliptic, parabolic, and hyperbolic type - in two and several variables. Emphasis is placed on the connection of PDEs and complex variable methods. This second volume addresses Solvability of operator equations in Banach spaces; Linear operators in Hilbert spaces and spectral theory; Schauder's theory of linear elliptic differential equations; Weak solutions of differential equations; Nonlinear partial differential equations and characteristics; Nonlinear elliptic systems with differential-geometric applications. While partial differential equations are solved via integral representations in the preceding volume, this volume uses functional analytic solution methods.

Book Description
This is the practical introduction to the analytical approach taken in Volume 2. Based upon courses in partial differential equations over the last two decades, the text covers the classic canonical equations, with the method of separation of variables introduced at an early stage. The characteristic method for first order equations acts as an introduction to the classification of second order quasi-linear problems by characteristics. Attention then moves to different co-ordinate systems, primarily those with cylindrical or spherical symmetry. Hence a discussion of special functions arises quite naturally, and in each case the major properties are derived. The next section deals with the use of integral transforms and extensive methods for inverting them, and concludes with links to the use of Fourier series.

Book Description
This textbook is a completely revised, updated, and expanded English edition of the important Analyse fonctionnelle (1983). In addition, it contains a wealth of problems and exercises (with solutions) to guide the reader. Uniquely, this book presents in a coherent, concise and unified way the main results from functional analysis together with the main results from the theory of partial differential equations (PDEs). Although there are many books on functional analysis and many on PDEs, this is the first to cover both of these closely connected topics. Since the French book was first published, it has been translated into Spanish, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Romanian, Greek and Chinese. The English edition makes a welcome addition to this list.

Book Description
This comprehensive two-volume textbook covers the whole area of Partial Differential Equations - of the elliptic, parabolic, and hyperbolic type - in two and several variables. Special emphasis is placed on the connection of PDEs and complex variable methods. In this first volume the following topics are treated: Integration and differentiation on manifolds, Functional analytic foundations, Brouwer's degree of mapping, Generalized analytic functions, Potential theory and spherical harmonics, Linear partial differential equations. We solve partial differential equations via integral representations in this volume, reserving functional analytic solution methods for Volume Two.

Book Description
Partial differential equations are fundamental to the modeling of natural phenomena. The desire to understand the solutions of these equations has always had a prominent place in the efforts of mathematicians and has inspired such diverse fields as complex function theory, functional analysis, and algebraic topology. This book, meant for a beginning graduate audience, provides a thorough introduction to partial differential equations.

Book Description
Functional analysis is not only a tool for unifying mathematical analysis, but it also provides the background for today''s rapid development of the theory of partial differential equations. Using concepts of functional analysis, the field of complex analysis has developed methods (such as the theory of generalized analytic functions) for solving very general classes of partial differential equations. This book is aimed at promoting further interactions of functional analysis, partial differential equations, and complex analysis including its generalizations such as Clifford analysis. New interesting problems in the field of partial differential equations concern, for instance, the Dirichlet problem for hyperbolic equations. Applications to mathematical physics address mainly Maxwell''s equations, crystal optics, dynamical problems for cusped bars, and conservation laws. Sample Chapter(s). Hyperbolic Equations, Waves and the Singularity Theory (858 KB). Contents: Boundary Value Problems and Initial Value Problems for Partial Differential Equations; Applications of Functional-Analytic and Complex Methods to Mathematical Physics; Partial Complex Differential Equations in the Plane; Complex Methods in Higher Dimensions. Readership: Researchers, lecturers and graduate students in the fields of analysis & differential equations, applied mathematics and mathematical physics.

Book Description
Nonlinear partial differential equations has become one of the main tools of mod ern mathematical analysis; in spite of seemingly contradictory terminology, the subject of nonlinear differential equations finds its origins in the theory of linear differential equations, and a large part of functional analysis derived its inspiration from the study of linear pdes. In recent years, several mathematicians have investigated nonlinear equations, particularly those of the second order, both linear and nonlinear and either in divergence or nondivergence form. Quasilinear and fully nonlinear differential equations are relevant classes of such equations and have been widely examined in the mathematical literature. In this work we present a new family of differential equations called "implicit partial differential equations", described in detail in the introduction (c.f. Chapter 1). It is a class of nonlinear equations that does not include the family of fully nonlinear elliptic pdes. We present a new functional analytic method based on the Baire category theorem for handling the existence of almost everywhere solutions of these implicit equations. The results have been obtained for the most part in recent years and have important applications to the calculus of variations, nonlin ear elasticity, problems of phase transitions and optimal design; some results have not been published elsewhere.
