Fun In The Harbour
Author: Simon Dudley
Publisher: indi-scribbler
ISBN:
Category : Comics & Graphic Novels
Languages : en
Pages : 84
Book Description
FUN IN THE HARBOUR is the fifth book in the series where Laura and her friends meet Mystic Marge, the barge lady, at the local canal festival. One of Big Sue’s llamas becomes ill, and Blackjack, the travellers’ horse doctor, is called into action to save him. The bad-tempered canal lock keeper gets more than he bargained for when Laura and her friends get their revenge in the dark, cold waters of the harbour. And what ghostly phantom lurks above the organ in the village church. Simon Dudley’s beautifully written and charmingly portrayed, adventure series is a pleasure to read. The lost and nearly forgotten years of 1950’s childhood can be experienced within these pages as the author cleverly immerses you into their world. This is a real treat for any reader, young or old, who fancies a bit of time-travel back to when kids could literally be kids. The books can be read in any order as the stories stand alone. The main character in the series is Laura McBean, and because of her mischievous behaviour, in her younger years, was nicknamed Laura McNaughty. The stories are set in England in the 1950s which was probably the last decade where kids could safely play outside and roam around to their hearts’ content. Laura lives in the middle cottage of three, which used to be owned by the Railways, with her mother, her brother, Johnny, and their dog, Trudy. Her Nanny Conks lives in the first cottage, and “Neverin” (her Aunty Nancy) lives in the third. Their garden backs onto Stokey’s woods, and the beach is a fifteen-minute walk through the woodland. A group of travellers set up camp in the woods during the summer months, and this where you meet “Blackjack” the travellers’ Horse Doctor and his old horse Lightning. The empty railway buildings and platform are a stone’s throw from the cottages; and the disused, and heavily overgrown, track is still in place all the way down to the village. So come along and join Laura and her friends on their many adventures.

Fun in Fusion Research
Author: John Sheffield
Publisher: Newnes
ISBN: 0124078613
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 160
Book Description
This book discusses the fun side of the quest to develop fusion energy—a modern equivalent of the hunt for the Holy Grail. After more than 70 years of research, despite great progress, the goal has not been realized. Do you have to be crazy to love quests like this? Not really, but you do have to have an unshakeable optimism. Through humorous anecdotes, and accessible yet detailed scientific discussion, this book illuminates the enjoyment of scientific research through an account of fifty years working on fusion energy development. The anecdotes bring out the human side of research, in which innovative and sometimes egocentric scientists create both clever and nutty experiments. Among the many stories within are witchcraft at Harwell, shocking experiences, entertaining talks, and the wit of top scientists such as Marshall Rosenbluth. Above all the book highlights the significant advances made in developing practical fusion energy and the promise for an exciting future with the National Ignition Facility and International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor. This book will be of interest to physicists as well as other students and researchers in the scientific and wider communities. - Shows the exciting and fun aspects of science research - Author has spent 54 years working in the area, offering key insights on the history of fusion - Clear, detailed explanations of fusion energy are supplied, helping non-science readers understand the area

The Fun of It
Author: E. B. White
Publisher: Modern Library
ISBN: 0375756493
Category : Literary Collections
Languages : en
Pages : 514
Book Description
William Shawn once called The Talk of the Town the soul of the magazine. The section began in the first issue, in 1925. But it wasn't until a couple of years later, when E. B. White and James Thurber arrived, that the Talk of the Town story became what it is today: a precise piece of journalism that always gets the story and has a little fun along the way. The Fun of It is the first anthology of Talk pieces that spans the magazine's life. Edited by Lillian Ross, the longtime Talk reporter and New Yorker staff writer, the book brings together pieces by the section's most original writers. Only in a collection of Talk stories will you find E. B. White visiting a potter's field; James Thurber following Gertrude Stein at Brentano's; Geoffrey Hellman with Cole Porter at the Waldorf Towers; A. J. Liebling on a book tour with Albert Camus; Maeve Brennan ventriloquizing the long-winded lady; John Updike navigating the passageways of midtown; Calvin Trillin marching on Washington in 1963; Jacqueline Onassis chatting with Cornell Capa; Ian Frazier at the Monster Truck and Mud Bog Fall Nationals; John McPhee in virgin forest; Mark Singer with sixth-graders adopting Hudson River striped bass; Adam Gopnik in Flatbush visiting the ìgrandest theatre devoted exclusively to the movies; Hendrik Hertzberg pinning down a Sulzberger on how the Times got colorized; George Plimpton on the tennis court with Boris Yeltsin; and Lillian Ross reporting good little stories for more than forty-five years. They and dozens of other Talk contributors provide an entertaining tour of the most famous section of the most famous magazine in the world.
