This report documents the results of a full-scale crash test with a minicompact car on the aluminum tru-beam bridge railing. The purpose of the test was to determine whether geometrics of the railing system were adequate to prevent snagging of the vehicle. This railing design had been developed from the Indiana 5A railing design after strength problems had been discovered in full-scale crash tests of the design in a previous study. The Indiana 5A railing design was modified by replacing the lower rail element with a tru-beam rail. The performance of this aluminum tru-beam railing system was acceptable when subjected to a test with a 4,500 lb (2,041 kg) vehicle. Subsequently, in this study, the tru-beam design was subjected to a test with a 2,150 lb (975 kg) Honda to see if the new design would preclude snagging of the small vehicle. Performance of the railing was acceptable by criteria in NCHRP 230.

This study consisted of strength analyses of five in-service bridge railing systems, thirty full-scale vehicle crash tests on those railing systems and on a load measuring wall, the development of recommended design guidelines and development of recommended performance standards. The spectrum of vehicles addressed ranged from an 1,800 lb Honda sedan to a 32,000 lb intercity bus. Some of the in-service railings were found to have poor performance in full-scale crash tests.

An assortment of retrofit bridge railings and a retrofit transition were evaluated through full-scale crash testing. The assortment included: (1) a W-beam retrofit railing for a concrete baluster bridge railing (AASHTO performance level one); (2) a W-beam transition for the bridge railing above (NCHRP Report 350 test level two); (3) a double-tube pedestrian/bicycle railing mounted on the Illinois 2399-1 traffic railing (AASHTO performance level one); (4) a vandal protection fence on the New Jersey concrete safety shape bridge railing (AASHTO performance level two); and (5) a thrie beam retrofit railing, a Delaware design, mounted on a 203-mm-high safety curb (AASHTO performance level two and NCHRP Report 350 test level four). All of the designs demonstrated acceptable performance.
