Monitoring, Early Warning and Mitigation of Natural and Engineered Slopes, volume III
Author: Wen Nie
Publisher: Frontiers Media SA
ISBN: 2832553214
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 239
Book Description
Natural and engineered slopes are widely distributed worldwide, including mountain slopes, highway slopes, mine slopes, reservoir dams, etc. These slopes could become unstable due to natural factors or human activities, causing catastrophic loss of life and infrastructure destruction. Therefore, these slopes require constant monitoring to provide early warning and enable mitigation. Advanced monitoring equipment, information technology, and multidisciplinary interaction theories have created new opportunities and challenges in this discipline. Recently, advanced monitoring devices, information technologies, and multidisciplinary intersection theories have contributed to the monitoring, early warning and mitigation of natural and engineered slopes. However, effective and efficient monitoring, precise early warning, low-cost and low-time-consuming remediation, and reliable risk assessment remain obstacles. This Research Topic aims to present the most recent innovative advancements and state-of-the-art natural and engineered slope monitoring, early warning, mitigation, and risk assessment.

Mega Quakes: Cascading Earthquake Hazards and Compounding Risks
Author: Katsuichiro Goda
Publisher: Frontiers Media SA
ISBN: 2889454541
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 314
Book Description
Large-scale earthquake hazards pose major threats to modern society, generating casualties, disrupting socioeconomic activities, and causing enormous economic loss across the world. Events, such as the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami and the 2011 Tohoku earthquake, highlighted the vulnerability of urban cities to catastrophic earthquakes. Accurate assessment of earthquake-related hazards (both primary and secondary) is essential to mitigate and control disaster risk exposure effectively. To date, various approaches and tools have been developed in different disciplines. However, they are fragmented over a number of research disciplines and underlying assumptions are often inconsistent. Our society and infrastructure are subjected to multiple types of cascading earthquake hazards; therefore, integrated hazard assessment and risk management strategy is needed for mitigating potential consequences due to multi-hazards. Moreover, uncertainty modeling and its impact on hazard prediction and anticipated consequences are essential parts of probabilistic earthquake hazard and risk assessment. The Research Topic is focused upon modeling and impact assessment of cascading earthquake hazards, including mainshock ground shaking, aftershock, tsunami, liquefaction, and landslide.

Water-Related Natural Disasters in Mountainous Area, volume II
Author: Jia-wen Zhou
Publisher: Frontiers Media SA
ISBN: 2832546072
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 238
Book Description
In mountainous areas, due to the unique geological and topographical conditions, and along with the impact of global climate change, extreme rainfall events often occur and induce natural disasters such as flash floods, debris flows, landslides, dammed lakes and others. These water-related natural disasters (WRNDs) frequently occur around the world, such as the July 29th 1998 debris flow and landslide dam at Capricorn Creek in Mount Meager Volcanic Complex (southern Canada), the flash flood of 20th August 2018 in Raganello Gorge (southern Italy), and the 2007 summer floods in the United Kingdom. WRNDs are more serious in Southeast Asia particularly in Southwest China, where many places suffer from such disasters in the flood season every year, such as the May 20th 2012 flash flood/debris flow among the hit area of Wenchuan earthquake, the June 24th 2017 Xinmo Catastrophic landslide in Mao county and in 2018 the two sequential landslide-dammed lake events at Jinsha River. These WRNDs not only cause heavy casualties and property losses but also destroy the ecological environment. These WRNDs are not only the concern of government managers and engineers, but also deserve more in-depth study from researchers. Formation and evolution mechanisms of WRNDs are very complicated, and influenced by several aspects, such as geological and topographical conditions, hydrometeorological conditions, geomaterial properties, rainfall history and flow condition, and others. Field and laboratory tests can help us to better understand the related mechanism behind the disasters. Theoretical and empirical models, modeling and numerical methods can provide more reasonable evaluation and forecasting results of WRNDs, but a more in-depth understanding is needed. Furthermore, for the risk control and hazard prevention and mitigation, new equipment and technologies have been developed and have achieved some progress in recent years, but the fast and effective emergency treatments for WRNDs need more attention.
