Book Description
Recent events have shown the harmful effects of radiation and the possible spread-area of radioactive contaminants in the environment. Nevertheless, the use of radiation in treating cancer has widened to include more types of radiation and heavy ions to improve results with radioprotective and radiosensitizing compounds. These proceedings cover a wide scope of topics ranging from radiotherapy, radiation carcinogenesis and radiation protection to the impact of radiation on the environment. They provide both an indispensable state-of-the-art report and a stimulating discussion of important developments in this exciting field of research.

Book Description
This book provides a thorough yet concise introduction to quantitative radiobiology and radiation physics, particularly the practical and medical application. Beginning with a discussion of the basic science of radiobiology, the book explains the fast processes that initiate damage in irradiated tissue and the kinetic patterns in which such damage is expressed at the cellular level. The final section is presented in a highly practical handbook style and offers application-based discussions in radiation oncology, fractionated radiotherapy, and protracted radiation among others. The text is also supplemented by a Web site.

Book Description
The mode of action by radiation is postulated to be the production of double strand breaks of DNA. The repair of double strand breaks occurs through non homologous end joining through acetylation of histone proteins by histone acetyltransferases (HATs). The fixation of double strand breaks through HAT inhibitors is a promising application for radiation sensitization in the clinic. P53 is a tumour suppressor gene and its mutation has been implicated in 60% of human cancers. As one of the pivotal anticancer genes, P53 controls the transcription and translation of a series of genes. The kinetics of DNA double strand break generation and their co relation to P53 status, ATM and ARF activation are computed and modelled for understanding the potential of such research.
