The increased presence of warm Atlantic water on the Greenland continental shelf and within glacial fjords has been connected to the accelerated melting of the Greenland Ice Sheet, particularly in the southwest and southeast continental shelf regions. Meltwater is transported into the Labrador Sea where it may disrupt deep convection, a process that has been linked to the variability of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC). To study the transport of heat onto the continental shelf and freshwater into the Labrador Sea, we use coupled ocean/sea-ice simulations with horizontal resolutions that permit or resolve mesoscale eddies. We compare the on shelf transport of heat in two mesoscale eddy-permitting simulations. In both simulations, the region of greatest heat flux onto the shelf is southeast Greenland and south of the Denmark strait, where there is a seasonally persistent pattern of multi-day variability in the cross-shelf heat flux. This high-frequency variability is associated with Denmark Strait Overflow eddies propagating along the shelfbreak. Using mesoscale eddy-resolving simulations to compare the off-shelf transport of meltwater and impacts on the West Greenland Current, we find that vertically distributed meltwater results in an increase in total freshwater flux into the Labrador Sea. Eddy kinetic energy and baroclinic conversion in the West Greenland Current along the continental shelf break also increase with the addition of vertically distributed meltwater. Finally, we derive and test a box model to represent the mixing within fjords. This Fjord Box Model merges buoyant plume theory with the estuarine mixing that occurs along fjords. The Fjord Box Model provides a more realistic boundary condition for meltwater forcing in ocean models that cannot resolve fjords.

Fjords are both an interface and a buffer between glaciated continents and the oceans. They exhibit a very wide range in environmental conditions, both in dynamics and geography. Some are truly wonders of the world with their dizzying mountain slopes rising sharply from the ocean edge. Others represent some of the harshest conditions on earth, with hurricane winds, extremes in temperature, and catastrophic earth and ice movements. Fjords are unique estuaries and represent a large portion of the earth's coastal zone. Yet they are not very well known, given the increasing population and food pressures, and their present industrial and strategic importance. Temperate zone estuaries have had many more years of intense study, with multiyear data available. Most fjords have not been impacted by man but, if history repeats itself, that condition will not last long. Fjords present some unique environmental problems, such as their usually slow flushing time, a feature common to many silled environments. Thus there is presently a need for management guidelines, which can only be based on a thorough knowledge of the way fjords work. Fjords are, in many respects, perfect natural oceanographic and geologic lab oratories. Source inputs are easily identified and their resulting gradients are well developed. This trip backward in time capsulizes in a general way the geologic development of the area that is now northern Alaska. The Cretaceous through Recent history is predominantly one of erosion of the ancient Brooks Range and filling of the Colville Geosyncline under processes like those in Operation today. All the rocks older than Jurassic, however, were deposited far from their present sites. One of the intriguing tectonic puzzles involves the geographic positions and relative timing of events that occurred during the orogeny that built the Brooks Range. I suggest that pre-Cretaceous deposition took place far to the north along the western margin of the Caledonides. Subsequently, the region that is now northern Alaska moved southward and impinged upon a northward moving plate, or plates, from the Pacific region. Interactions between these two major parts of the earth's crust produced the Brooks Range during the Jurassic. Later developments reflect continuing readjustments of the northern third of of thrust Alaska as southward movement was dissipated in diverse systems faulting and lateral displacement.
