Book Description
Excerpt from The Home Garden Is there no beauty in Pomona that we can call to our aid? For why should we everlastingly apply to Flora for everything that is beautiful in the embellishment of our gardens Fruit-trees have flowers as well, and thus they Offer us a double supply of beauty; being beautiful when in flower and beautiful when in fruit - pleasing to the eye and to the taste, and ornamental as well as useful - doubly gratifying and doubly enjoyable. Plants with bright seed-vessels are always in demand for their ornamental qualities; but, after all, these only please the eye, instead of furnishing, like the fruit-trees, entertainment for man and beast. Red-cheeked apples, it is argued, are quite as decorative as red-berried shrubs; and the bird's-eye cherry is scarcely more desirable when in flower than any other cherry, while the ripe fruit, preserves, etc., of the ordinary kind will cause the empty blossoms to go up at full sail. Book Description
Excerpt from The Old-Fashioned Garden: And Other Verses So bright and lovely is the dear old place, It seems as though the country's very heart Were centered here, and that its antique grace Must ever hold it from the world apart. Immured it lies among the meadows deep, Its flowery stillness beautiful and calm as softest sleep. Some like a garden where the hand of art Appears in every terrace, walk, and bed, Where vases stand in even rows apart And shrubs are taught symmetric shade to spread But little art I wish; enough for me This garden where the flowers grow in sweet simplicity. Fair is each budding thing the garden shows, From spring's frail crocus to the latest bloom Of fading autumn. Every wind that blows Across that glowing tract sips rare perfume From all the tangled blossoms tossing there Soft winds, they fain would linger long, nor farther fare! The morning-glories ripple o'er the hedge And fleck its greenness with their tinted foam Sweet Wilding things, up to the garden's edge They love to wander from their meadow home, To take what little pleasure here they may Ere all their silken trumpets close before the warm mid-day. Book Description
Excerpt from Four Seasons in the Garden Cess. The first thing to do is to grade the ground evenly. Most persons prefer a lawn that slopes away from house to road in an almost imperceptible incline of surface. Such a lawn is easier to make than a level one, be cause any little departure from a perfectly even surface Will be far less noticeable. To secure the necessary slope, ea1'th will have to be filled in near the house if the lot 18 a comparatively level one. Wherever there has been an exca vation made for the house-walls or a cellar, there Will generally be enough earth near the house to furnish all the filling needed in making the required slope. This soil, Which is almost always hard, should be worked over until it is as fine and mellow as possible, for a good lawn cannot be made from a coarse and lumpy soil. If the soil is not rich, it should be made so. I would advise the use of bone-meal in liberal quantity in preference to barn-yard fertilizer, because it never introduces the seeds of weeds into the lawn, as manure from the stables is very sure to do. Coarse bone-meal, in the pro portion of a half pound to each square yard. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from My Little Garden: And Your Little Garden Of course, we all know the quaint little old fashioned flower bed in the middle of the lawn is quite a thing of the past; in order to make a perfect landscape we must have a picture in a frame as it were, a lawn, a house, and a bor der. I can safely say, all flowers require sun shine; therefore we must follow Mr. Sun for a day or two, and see just where he casts his beams, for in just those spots must we use our greatest efforts. Book Description
Excerpt from The Vegetable Garden A light or sandy soil will be benefited if worked when moist, as it makes it more compact; on the contrary a clay soil should be worked when dry, otherwise it becomes pasty, and if hot, dry weather ensues, it hardens or bakes, thus preventing the germination of seeds, and checks the growth of plants by becoming almost impervious to the action of the air, heat and moisture. Book Description
Excerpt from Garden-Craft: Old and New Because the old gardens are what they are - beautiful yesterday, beautiful to-day, and beautiful always we do well to turn to them, not to copy their exact lines, nor to limit ourselves to the range of their ornament and ej'ects, but to glean hints for our garden-enterprise to-day, to drink of their spirit, to gain impulsion from them. As as not, the forgotten field proves the richest of pastu res. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
