This book traces the history of English education in the People’s Republic of China from 1949 to the present day. It uses the junior secondary school curriculum as the means to examine how English curriculum developers and textbook writers have confronted the shifting ambiguities and dilemmas over five distinct historical periods. The study of the processes of curriculum development and the products such as syllabi and textbooks offers insights into the construction of an ‘official’ English, as well as what was considered as acceptable content in English. This book addresses fundamental and significant questions concerning the English promoted in China, namely its characteristics; its changes over time and explanations for such changes; and the kind of content that has been viewed as appropriate for textbooks. To investigate these issues, the analysis draws on qualitative and quantitative data, such as interviews with principal stakeholders and analysis of the syllabus and recommended textbooks. Specifically, it looks at the choice and organization of linguistic components, and the orientation and messages of the curriculum. “Language education in China during the second half of the twentieth century might arguably be called the world’s largest language engineering project. Since 1979, thousands of Westerners have been entering China. These include numbers of foreign teachers who have been invited by the Chinese to observe and participate in the educational system. Why were they invited? And just what did the foreign teachers expect to contribute? In Foreign Teachers in China, Edgar A. Porter addresses and explores these and other questions. Although the events surrounding June 4, 1989 have brought many more issues and realities to light, the book seeks to present the ten-year period of East-West relationships, beginning in 1979, and tests Jonathan Spence's argument in his book To Change China that Chinese invite foreigners only for their technical expertise and that foreigners enter China primarily to change it in their own image. Porter sums up both Chinese and foreign perceptions regarding the role of foreign teachers in China's colleges and universities during 1979 (post-Mao years) and up until the events in Beijing in June of 1989. Divided into three sections, the first presents the history of the role of foreigners in China's institutions of higher learning. The best way to summarize the main issues is fact-finding, and it should be inclusive of what people need to know about becoming professional in one of the more challenging environments. I took into consideration the paid and voluntary jobs I had in the United Kingdom, Israel, and Nepal before being invited to the Far East. Creating a career out of nearly nothing is nothing short of a miracle. The Chinese people have, in effect, allowed me to (1) create or establish a new home, (2) create a new career, (3) find a soul mate, and (4) finally publish what would be my sixth book. Almost no one helped me perform this duty because each foreign teacher has his or her strategies of teaching. I am, however, truly grateful for my loving wife, Yvonne Wu, for giving me all the assistance and guidance for making this happen. In view of the ever-challenging demands of Chinese students, parents, and bilingual schools, every effort is being made to modify methods to ensure that my classes are as interesting as possible.
