L'apprentissage de l'orthographe lexicale nécessite de mémoriser la forme orthographique de nombreux mots. Cette mémorisation s'effectue souvent par le biais du décodage en lecture. Les recherches menées jusqu'à présent n'ont pas permis de savoir combien de rencontres sont nécessaires pour qu'un mot nouveau soit mémorisé. L'objectif de notre travail est de déterminer, en fonction des caractéristiques de l'item présenté, le nombre d'expositions permettant aux enfants de retenir une forme jusqu'alors inconnue (pseudo-mots). Pour cela, nous avons soumis 209 enfants à des textes créés spécifiquement pour cette étude et comportant des pseudo-mots sans double consonne (SDC) ou avec double consonne fréquente (DCF) ou rare (DCR). Chaque enfant a vu les trois types de PSM et ce, 4, 8 et 12 fois. Les analyses statistiques ont montré un effet significatif du type d'items lus et du nombre de lectures de l'item, mais sans interaction entre les deux variables. Par ailleurs, les performances des enfants s'améliorent toujours, quel que soit l'item même si, pour les DCR, l'apprentissage est plus lent à partir de 8 rencontres. En conclusion, nos hypothèses de départ ont bien été vérifiées: les items simples sont mieux mémorisés que les doublets fréquents qui sont mieux mémorisés que les doublets rares. Les items sont d'autant mieux mémorisés qu'ils sont rencontrés fréquemment.
