Two levels of solutions are thus identified: first, those which meet the basic French building code regulations; and, second, those which can bring dwelling units up to the French Acoustical Comfort Standard.

Excerpt from Building Research Translation: French Acoustical Comfort Standards; March 1978 As a general rule, good design will make the result more reliable, and do it with less work all around, than will mediocre or slipshod acoustical design, such as cutting down noise levels in apartment buildings by juxtaposing rooms of different kinds, alternating noisy rooms with quiet ones, etc. Furthermore, the solutions suggested here are worthless unless they last. For some installations (floors and floor coverings, notably), this may require regular inspection for wear, maintenance, and, if necessary, replacement with materials of at least equivalent acoustical quality.
