This report states that local representatives of the Interior Ministry often refuse to accept registration papers when a group's objectives or membership displeases the authorities. Moroccan law permits new associations to come into being simply by registering with local authorities, rather than by requiring prior authorization. Freedom of Association
Author: Amy Gutmann
Publisher: Princeton University Press
ISBN: 0691219389
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 391
Book Description
Americans are joiners. They are members of churches, fraternal and sororal orders, sports leagues, community centers, parent-teacher associations, professional associations, residential associations, literary societies, national and international charities, and service organizations of seemingly all sorts. Social scientists are engaged in a lively argument about whether decreasing proportions of Americans over the past several decades have been joining secondary associations, but no one disputes that freedom of association remains a fundamental personal and political value in the United States. "Nothing," Alexis de Tocqueville argued, "deserves more attention." Yet the value and limits of free association in the United States have not received the attention they deserve. Why is freedom of association valuable for the lives of individuals? What does it contribute to the life of a liberal democracy? This volume explores the individual and civic values of associational freedom in a liberal democracy, as well as the moral and constitutional limits of claims to associational freedom. Beginning with an introductory essay on freedom of association by Amy Gutmann, the first part of this timely volume includes essays on individual rights of association by George Kateb, Michael Walzer, Kent Greenawalt, and Nancy Rosenblum, and the second part includes essays on civic values of association by Will Kymlicka, Yael Tamir, Daniel A. Bell, Sam Fleischacker, Alan Ryan, and Stuart White.

Freedom of Association in China and Europe
Author: Yuwen Li
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9047415868
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 470
Book Description
Understanding and exercising the right to freedom of association, in a modern sense, is a relatively new phenomenon in China. The reform of ‘old’ social organizations and the emergence of new, privately-initiated, non-profit organizations only began to occur in the 1980s, and such organizations continued to expand throughout the 1990s. Within a short period these new organizations have become a vibrant force in Chinese society. This unique volume – the first book in English to offer systematic and critical research in this field - is the outcome of a three-year research project on the Legal Aspects of Social Organisations in China. The main aim of the project was to encourage Chinese researchers to deepen their knowledge and understanding of the current status of social organizations in China, and to allow them to explore possible ways of creating a friendly legal environment conducive to the exercise of the right to freedom of association. The book contains some of the best results of the Chinese researchers’ work and papers presented by European experts at two international seminars, organized jointly by the Institute of Law of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and Law Faculty of Utrecht University, The Netherlands. The contributions of the European experts explore different systems of regulation that have developed, and which are accommodated within the legal framework and traditions of each particular country. The aim of the volume is to stimulate international understanding of the progress made by China and the dilemmas it still faces with respect to its emerging new civil society organizations.

Public Freedom
Author: Dana Villa
Publisher: Princeton University Press
ISBN: 1400837421
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 453
Book Description
The freedom to take part in civic life--whether in the exercise of one's right to vote or congregate and protest--has become increasingly less important to Americans than individual rights and liberties. In Public Freedom, renowned political theorist Dana Villa argues that political freedom is essential to both the preservation of constitutional government and the very substance of American democracy itself. Through intense close readings of theorists such as Hegel, Tocqueville, Mill, Adorno, Arendt, and Foucault, Villa diagnoses the key causes of our democratic discontent and offers solutions to preserve at least some of our democratic hopes. He demonstrates how Americans' preoccupation with a market-based conception of freedom--that is, the personal freedom to choose among different material, moral, and vocational goods--has led to the gradual erosion of meaningful public participation in politics as well as diminished interest in the health of the public realm itself. Villa critically examines, among other topics, the promise and limits of civil society and associational life as sources of democratic renewal; the effects of mass media on the public arena; and the problematic but still necessary ideas of civic competence and democratic maturity. Public Freedom is a passionate and insightful defense of political liberties at a moment in America's history when such freedoms are very much at risk.
