His great-grandfather on his mother's side was Edward Holyoke, President of Harvard College from 1737 to 1769. His grandfather was Lemuel Hedge, minister of the town of Warwick, Mass, and a man of mark in his day. His father, Levi Hedge, was Professor of logic and philosophy at Harvard from 1810 to 1827. It will be clear where Frederic got a certain resolute tenacity of purpose if it is added that his father could not go to college for lack of funds to send more than one of the six brothers and was apprenticed to a blacksmith, 'but made his own way at last to Harvard and was graduated in 1792.
