Book Description
Excerpt from France in the Nineteenth Century, 1830-1890 The sources from which I have drawn the materials for this book are various; they come largely from private papers, and from articles contributed to magazines and newspapers by contemporary writers, French, English, and American. I had not at first intended the work for publication, and I omitted to make notes which would have enabled me to restore to others the "unconsidered trifles" that I may have taken from them. As far as possible, I have endeavored to remedy this; but should any other writer find a gold thread of his own in my embroidery, I hope he will look upon it as an evidence of my appreciation of his work, and not as an act of intentional dishonesty. Book Description
Elizabeth Latimer's France in the Nineteenth Century is a comprehensive examination of France that covers the years 1830-1890, from the immediate aftermath of the Napoleonic Era to the results of the Franco-Prussian War. As she explained in a companion work about England in the 19th century: "IN respect to my "France in the Nineteenth Century," and "Russia and Turkey" in the same period, I have sometimes been reminded by reviewers-most kind to the books, however, as readable, amusing, and instructive-that I was not an historian working up new material for a definite result. I readily accept this opinion; I have no desire to arrogate to myself the high title of an historian, though, to a certain extent, all history must be compilation. My aim has been to throw flashes of light on events which during my lifetime have interested the public; to amuse, and now and then instruct, the "general reader." Had I called my work "Historical Gossip," as I at first intended, my aim and scope in writing it might have been better understood. Throughout "France in the Nineteenth Century" there are many little personal reminiscences of my life in Paris from 1839 to 1842, and again in 1847 and 1848. I disguised these in the third person, not wishing to thrust my personality upon my readers. In the present volume I have done otherwise, and have made use of family and personal reminiscences as far as they would serve."

Book Description
"Using words and works of both pupils and masters of the French Academy of Beaux-Arts, this fascinating book provides a wealth of information about the environment and studio practices of French official art from 1830 to 1890. Albert Boime describes the training of new pupils in the Academic ateliers, from the time they began and were set to copy engravings and casts to their copying of the old masters in the Louvre to their work before the live model and landscape painting out-of-doors. Boime's account includes not only a history of the transition from guild-controlled arts sanctioned by the church to an academic system sponsored by the state but also a reassessment of the positive role played by the Academy's teaching program in the evolution of the independent movements of the nineteenth century"--Publisher's description.
