Book Description
The Family as Basic Social Unit provides a theologically rooted account of the family's social roles and responsibilities. As a basic social unit, the family is both internally social and socially interdependent with other social communities. Reflecting on the family's internally social character, Schemenauer proposes that Catholic social teaching applies to family interactions. He analyzes household labor using papal teaching on work and sibling violence with more recent theological analysis of peacemaking, and he argues that families can complete works of mercy when they feed hungry and care for sick family members. In the second part of the volume, Schemenauer describes the social interdependence of families. He analyzes the relationship between families and the Church, civil society, the economy, and the state. Schemenauer proposes that the question for families is not whether to engage with other social communities but how to do so well. He explicitly highlights how consumer capitalism creates obstacles for families attempting to live as a basic social unit. Then, employing the categories of infused simplicity and moral cooperation, he provides a framework for discerning family engagement with broader society. Finally, Schemenauer analyzes the relationship between family commitments and social ministry. Working from the family outward, Schemenauer describes how family commitments can motivate broader social service, but then employs the example of families involved in the Catholic Worker Movement to reflect on the joys and dangers of balancing commitment to one's family with social ministry focused on the urgent needs of those outside of one's household.

Book Description
Here is an essential volume for educators, social workers, health care professionals, and parents who are frustrated by the consuming power of drugs over the lives of young people and looking for answers to this enormous problem. In this unique and highly practical volume, experts concentrate on the family--the foundation of mental health and social control--as the most positive force in the prevention of adolescent drug use. Despite the “war on drugs,” young people in large numbers continue to use substances. This instructive guide focuses on educating and strengthening families--which makes stronger children who are less likely to use drugs--instead of the traditional efforts based on rehabilitation instead of prevention. It offers instructive background information about societal forces that affect families and make it difficult to raise drug-free youngsters. Family differences are discussed, such as family structure, parenting styles, ethnic and cultural characteristics. Contributors thoroughly examine practical, effective interventions--at home, at school, and with peers--that are positive rather than negative, instructional rather than punitive, and preventive instead of remedial.

The book offers crucial advice in helping entrepreneurs and their families find or found a family office that fits their goals. The authors survey the key considerations in this process, including: What are the different models for family offices, and what are their respective benefits? What costs can be expected from a family office, and how much wealth must be under management to justify them? What are the role and responsibilities of the Family Officer and his staff? Which are best practices for family governance, succession planning, and philanthropy at a family office? These insights are then supplemented by a wide-ranging set of interviews with family members, family officers and consultants from around the world. Both family office professionals and families themselves will benefit from this thorough but highly approachable examination. The author team of Boris Canessa, Jens Escher, Alexander Koeberle-Schmid, Peter Preller and Christoph Weber are each experts in a specific field related to the family office. They apply their professional and personal knowledge as family office specialists to provide details on organization of the family office, governance structures, asset allocation, succession and family governance planning and more.

Book Description
This book is intended to be a contribution to the Congolese churchs response to the reconciliation and peacemaking process. The authors assumption is that when the local church in the Congo becomes a church family, it will be able to integrate the reconciliation strategies emerging from the culture of the people into the theological reflection and pastoral praxis for peacemaking and reconciliation. Concretely, the Congolese churchwhich is committed to reconciliation and peacemakinghas to become like an extended family, a lineage, a clan, or a tribe. Through cultural and Christian rituals, the church must bring together a people divided by conflicts and violence.
