Book Description
Excerpt from Forty-Seventh Annual Meeting of the Maryland State Teachers Association, 1930 The meeting was called to order by the President, Superintendent Woodland C. Phillips, of Howard County, at 8 P. M. Mr. Phillips: Ladies and Gentlemen, as President of the Maryland State Teachers' Association, I have the honor to convene the forty-seventh annual conference. Superintendent A. R. Spaid, of Dorchester County, will now lead us in prayer. Supt. A. R. Spaid: Let us bow our heads in prayer. Our Heavenly Father, at the close of this day and at the beginning of this meeting, we wish to express our thanks for Thy goodness to us in caring for our lives, and in blessing us in many ways. We come here this evening, our Heavenly Father, as a body of teachers to receive instruction and inspiration, and to at the same time rest from the labors of this year, and we trust that we come into this room this evening with a full understanding of the purpose for which we have met, and that at this time we will give to Thee the thanks due for the many good things that have entered into our lives during the past year, for the blessings that have come to us through the little people who have been under our care and instruction, and our Heavenly Father, tonight may no teacher feel that her work for the year has gone for naught. The seed has been sown, the harvest will come by and by, and may we all trust that the work has been well done. This evening we would ask Thy blessings upon the officers of this Association. We would ask Thy blessings upon the State Superintendent, and his assistants, and those who are directing the educational work in the State of Maryland. These men and women throughout the State who are devoting their lives to this unselfish duty of instructing the youth. May they feel that God stands by everyone of them in the great work that they have to do, the work that they have chosen. May Thy blessings continue upon our meetings from day to day, and may we receive instruction and inspiration, and may we after we have brought our meeting to a close go to our homes feeling refreshed, feeling that we again are ready to take up our task for the new year, which will soon be upon us. Book Description
Excerpt from Forty-Sixth Annual Meeting of the Maryland State Teachers Association, 1940 There has been more than a. Traditional respect for the idea that unless the meeting of the Maryland State Teachers' Association be held at. Some resort-place the enrollment would be a failure. It can be said to the credit of the Association that the spirit which dominates its mem hership is of such an order as to put to flight any such false notions. The Annapolis meeting is a complete answer to the oft repeated charge that teachers attend this annual gathering primarily for pleasure, and because of an opportunity to spend a few days at the seaside or in some mountain resort. It is now plain the real motive is educational or professional. Teachers, first of all, want to keep in touch with ques tions which affect their work; they want the inspiration and encourage ment which come from participation in the program or listening to the expressed ideas of those whose Opportunities have been better than. Theirs and they appreciate an interchange of views on matters of common interest. Annapolis, the capital of our State, could not make its appeal to our school people that it is a pleasure resort, but barring one or two meetings, the enrollment this year (nearly eight hundred) is as good as we have ever had.
