Book Description
Winner of the Tony Hillerman Prize: “Politics, greed and Native American artifacts provide a sturdy foundation for the compelling debut.” —Associated Press In John Fortunato’s Dark Reservations, Bureau of Indian Affairs Special Agent Joe Evers still mourns the death of his wife and, after a bungled investigation, faces a forced early retirement. What he needs is a new career, not another case. But when Congressman Arlen Edgerton’s bullet-riddled Lincoln turns up on the Navajo reservation—twenty years after he had disappeared during a corruption probe—Joe must resurrect his failing career to solve the mysterious cold case. Partnering with Navajo Tribal Officer Randall Bluehorse, his investigation antagonizes potential suspects, including a wealthy art collector, a former president of the Navajo Nation, a powerful US senator, and Edgerton’s widow, who is now the front-runner in the New Mexico governor’s race. An unexpected romance further complicates both the investigation and Joe’s troubled relationship with his daughter, forcing him to confront his emotional demons while on the trail of a ruthless killer. Joe uncovers a murderous conspiracy that leads him from ancient Anasazi burial grounds on the Navajo Nation to backroom deals in Washington, D.C. Along the way, he delves into the dangerous world of black-market trade in Native American artifacts. Can he unravel the mystery and bring the true criminal to justice, or will he become another silenced victim? “The novel . . . takes its themes and setting from the Joe Leaphorn/Jim Chee canon, but its characters are straight out of the tradition of hard-boiled police procedurals with flourishes of cowboy noir. Think: Harry Bosch, home on the rez.” —The Boston Globe

Book URL: https://www.areditions.com/rr/rra/a075.html In 1958 American composer Miriam Gideon (1906¿1996) completed her only opera, Fortunato, based on the eponymous ¿tragicomic farce¿ by the Spanish playwrights Serafín and Joaquín Álvarez Quintero (1871¿1938 and 1873¿1944, respectively). Although Gideon¿s opera has never received a full performance and has only been available until now in a marginally legible autograph copy of the piano-vocal score, it may be regarded as a central work within Gideon's style and oeuvre and an important American operatic work of the 1950s. In addition to the fully edited piano-vocal score, the edition includes a significant introductory essay that summarizes Gideon's compositional activity during the post¿World War II years, her most active period. The essay also provides a context for Gideon's opera by examining attitudes toward women composers in the American 1950s and by placing the opera's main themes into dialogue with recently discovered personal writings by the composer. A supplement to this edition includes Gideon's full orchestration of Fortunato¿s first scene, recently discovered among the composer¿s personal papers, which she may have intended as a sample piece to be pitched to television networks.

Book Description
Embark on an up-close and personal journey into the northern Peruvian jungle as last-chance entrepreneurs accidentally stumble upon a variety of cacao thought to be extinct, in this chocolate-rich business adventure memoir. Take a front row seat to a family of entrepreneurs searching relentlessly for a sustainable competitive advantage in the wake of many failed attempts at starting a family business. When they inadvertently discover the legendary Nacional white cacao bean in a remote canyon of the Peruvian jungle, the USDA calls it “an unprecedented discovery.” The cacao is so rare that even acclaimed author and travel host Anthony Bourdain and chef Eric Ripert trek to this particular jungle to film a segment for Bourdain's "Parts Unknown." With no job and no other way to earn a living, the author’s brother, Brian, moves to the jungle to live with cacao farmers—and Fortunato Chocolate is born. The family soon realize that their chocolate dream will only work if they reconceive and disrupt the supply chain. Instead of middlemen hoarding profits and keeping farmers in relentless poverty, they trade directly with them and produce what the BBC hails as "the Rolex of chocolate." Follow along as these intrepid entrepreneurs endure many heartbreaking near-victories and nail-biting adventures, ultimately shaking off failure and finding their competitive advantage in the humble white cacao bean and their ethical direct trade with the bean’s farmers. Finding Fortunato is an inspiring and improbable tale that's infused with the indomitable entrepreneurial spirit, and revels in the gut instincts that lead to unimaginable success.

Book Description
In choosing Peter Fortunato for a Pablo Neruda Award, Stanley Kunitz told the author, "You've discovered your legend. Now where will it take you?" Entering the Mountain is the result. "These poems brilliantly meld personal history, myth, and the heart's irrefutable music. The great poem, 'Every Wizard, ' like so much in this fine collection, is not only a testimony to history--his father's complicated immigrant experience--but to how each of us must honor the weight of love. We can celebrate Art, craft, and the intricacies of how a poem makes us feel, but Fortunato, like a seer, reminds us of the mind's irrepressible provender and the heart's irreducible calculus." --Kenneth A. McClane "The first thing we notice about the poetry of Peter Fortunato is the strength of voice as he delves into memories of family and kinship, and a cultural heritage going back to Italy and even classical Greece. An important theme in Entering the Mountain is performance, performance of music, of magic, escape artistry, the performance of rituals and celebrations of both the living and the dead, acts of homage and affection in our daily lives." --Robert Morgan "[These poems] walk the reader into a world that is full of mystery yet grounded in the poet's commitment to seeing and recording the natural world and his place in it, inviting us to be part of his magician's story." --Bertha Rogers

Book Description
How does coalition governance shape voters' perceptions of government parties and how does this, in turn, influence party behaviors? Analyzing cross-national panel surveys, election results, experiments, legislative amendments, media reports, and parliamentary speeches, Fortunato finds that coalition compromise can damage parties' reputations for competence as well as their policy brands in the eyes of voters. This incentivizes cabinet partners to take stands against one another throughout the legislative process in order to protect themselves from potential electoral losses. The Cycle of Coalition has broad implications for our understanding of electoral outcomes, partisan choices in campaigns, government formation, and the policy-making process, voters' behaviors at the ballot box, and the overall effectiveness of governance.
