Particle Physics: Perspectives And Opportunities - Report Of The Dpf Committee On Long-term Planning
Author: Robert N Cahn
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 9814549223
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 318
Book Description
This book is the result of a broad-based and in-depth study of high energy physics commissioned by the Executive Committee of the Division of Particles and Fields of the American Physical Society. This year-long study was initiated in the early 1994, in the wake of the cancellation of the SSC, and is meant to complement the report of the Drell HEPAP subpanel, charged with providing a vision for the future of the field. The DPF study of high energy physics was organized on the basis of the working groups, each led by a number of co-conveners chosen among established leaders in the various subspecialties in the field. These conveners, in turn, organized their working groups by inviting other active workers in the discipline to participate and gathered further input from the community by holding a variety of specialized meetings and workshops. This book contains the final reports of the 11 working groups assembled for the study, along with an extended overview and executive summary by the editors.

Semileptonic Form-factors from B to K*[gamma] Decays in the Large Energy Limit

Book Description
Making use of the measurement of the B[yields] K*[gamma] branching ratio together with the relations following from the limit of high recoil energy, we obtain stringent constraints on the values of the form-factors entering in heavy-to-light B[yields] V[ell][ell]' processes such as B[yields] K*[ell][sup+][ell][sup -], B[yields] K*[nu][bar[nu]] and B[yields][rho][ell][nu] decays. They show that the symmetry predictions, when combined with the experimental information on radiative decays, specify a severely restricted set of values for the vector and axial-vector form-factors evaluated at zero momentum transfer, q[sup 2]= 0. These constraints can be used to test model calculations and to improve our understanding of the q[sup 2]-dependence of semileptonic form-factors. We stress that the constraints remain stringent even when corrections are taken into account.

Book Description
The authors present a preliminary measurement of R[sub 1], and R[sub 2], and [rho][sup 2], which are the three parameters used to characterize the B [yields] D*[ell][bar [nu]][sub e] form factors (A[sub 1], V, and A[sub 2]). They use 85 x 10[sup 6] B[bar B]-pairs accumulated on the [Upsilon](4S) resonance at PEP-II. In this analysis they use the decay mode [bar B][sup 0] [yields] D[sup +]*e[sup -][bar [nu]] and its charge conjugate. The D*[sup +] is reconstructed in the channel D*[sup +] [yields] D[sup 0][pi][sup +] and the D[sup 0] in the channel D[sup 0] [yields] K[sup -][pi][sup +]. They parameterize the form factors in terms of their ratios (determined by the parameters R[sub 1] and R[sub 2]) and the common slope [rho][sup 2] in the variable w (a quantity related to the momentum transfer in the decay process). These parameters are determined via an unbinned maximum likelihood fit to the distributions in four kinematic variables (three decay angles and w). The results are R[sub 1] = 1.328 [+-] 0.055 [+-] 0.025 [+-] 0.025 and R[sub 2] = 0.920 [+-] 0.044 [+-] 0.020 [+-] 0.013 for the ratios and [rho][sup 2] = 0.769 [+-] 0.l039 [+-] 0.019 [+-] 0.032 for the slope. The stated errors are the statistical uncertainty from the data, statistical uncertainty from the size of the Monte Carlo sample and the systematic uncertainty, respectively.
