Book Description
Master's Thesis from the year 2021 in the subject Didactics - English - Pedagogy, Literature Studies, grade: 2.3, , language: English, abstract: Shopping dialogues, conversations, giving directions, introducing oneself, songs, rhymes, and chants. All of these terms refer to spoken language activities that primary school children stated that they strongly enjoy in the English lesson. It is a well-known fact that the most important competence in foreign language learning (FLL) is speaking. Besides listening comprehension or reading and writing, oral speech production helps the learner to acquire a language most effectively. It is not only essential for succeeding but also places the focus on the learner who actively performs and speaks in the new language to learn it. The result of active involvement is substantial enjoyment. In primary schools, this is especially the case when the activities conducted are designed in such a way that they elicit foreign language (FL) learners’ interest by meaningful implementations or authentic content that applies to their own life.

Book Description
Seminar paper from the year 2022 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Pedagogy, Literature Studies, grade: 1,3, University of Flensburg (Institut für Sprache, Literatur und Medien), course: TEFL in Primary School: Playful English Teaching, language: English, abstract: The aim of this paper is to raise awareness of the importance of integrating games in the primary EFL classroom. The approach to foreign language teaching has shifted in the sense that it is now not only a possibility but rather a requirement that foreign language teaching and learning should be enjoyable. A "teaching technique that is characterized by the elements of fun and play is the use of games". Hence, this paper argues for the implementation of games as a teaching technique in the primary EFL classroom and emphasizes the benefits of doing so regarding the positive impact it has on the language learning process. Although the pedagogical value of games in the teaching of English as a foreign language (EFL) is generally acknowledged, the usage of games in primary EFL education is "less documented and even less practiced [...] [since] [r]esearch on foreign language teaching and learning often focuses on older learners". The inclusion of games in children’s education has been studied but rarely with the focus on foreign language learning. Thus, there is still a lot of research to do when it comes to teaching English as a foreign language playfully to primary school students.

Book Description
Adopting a learner-centred approach that places an emphasis on hands-on child SL methodology, this book illustrates the practices used to teach young second language learners in different classroom contexts: (1) English-as-an-Additional-Language-or-Dialect (EAL/D) – both intensive EAL/D and EAL/D in the mainstream (2) Language-Other-Than-English (LOTE) (3) Content-and-Language-Integrated-Learning (CLIL), (4) Indigenous (5) Foreign-Language (FL). It will be particularly useful to undergraduate teachers to build upon the literacy unit they undertake in the first years of their course to explore factors that constitute an effective child SL classroom and, in practical terms, how to develop such a classroom. The pedagogical strategies for teaching young language learners in the six chapters are firmly guided by research-based findings, enabling not only pre-service teachers but also experienced teachers to make informed choices of how to effectively facilitate the development of the target language, empowering them to assume an active and effective role of classroom practitioners.

Positive psychology is the scientific study of how human beings prosper and thrive. This is the first book in SLA dedicated to theories in positive psychology and their implications for language teaching, learning and communication. The contributors present several innovative teaching ideas to bring out these characteristics among learners. The collection thus blends new teaching techniques with cutting-edge theory and empirical research undertaken using qualitative, quantitative and mixed-methods approaches. It will be of interest to SLA researchers, graduate students, trainee and experienced teachers who wish to learn more about language learning psychology, individual differences, learner characteristics and new classroom practices.
