Foreign Exchange Constraints to Trade and Development
Author: Philip Chase Abbott
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Agriculture
Languages : en
Pages : 68
Book Description
Extract: Many less developed countries (LDC's), facing huge trade deficits and shortages of foreign exchange, reduced their agricultural imports over the past few years from the United States and others. Unless cash-short LDC's increase their exports and obtain food and financial aid, agricultural imports by LDC's will grow much more slowly in the next decade than in the last. While many LDC's face long-term problems, others appear to be in short-term liquidity crises; if their export growth resumes, so will their agricultural imports. China, Brazil, Mexico, Nigeria, and India are key to world cereal trade. Those projections are based on a two-gap model applied to 31 LDC's.

Foreign Exchange Constraints and Imports in Developing Countries
Author: Rü_dü Saracoglu
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 29
Book Description
This paper estimates a disequilibrium model of developing country imports that incorporates determinants of private sector import demand as well as the foreign exchange rationing of the authorities. The parameters of the model are estimated using a full information maximum likelihood estimator, and the model provides an estimate of the probability of import rationing for each observation in the sample. Estimation results conform with the notion that there was regime switching, that is, periods of both import rationing and nonrationing were observed for the developing countries included in the study.

Trade, Finance and Developing Countries
Author: Sheila Page
Publisher: Rowman & Littlefield
ISBN: 9780389208907
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 478
Book Description
The author presents a detailed analysis of the past performance of a large range of developing countries. They are used to examine the opportunities facing other countries in the 1990s. Analysis of the successes of the Newly Industrialising countries has always emphasized the important role of exports-a view reinforced by the problems faced by those countries who have pursued inward-looking strategies and by the impact of the debt crisis in the 1980s. The author shows how national policies have not simply responded to external opportunities, but have used them and adapted their own strategies to international conditions. She also demonstrates the increasing importance of financing constraints. The reduction in the availability of external finance and the restrictions on the type available places a serious limitation on the choice of trade policies and therefore on industrial and development strategies that can be pursued.
