Book Description
"Official and officially recognized inspections and certification systems are fundamentally important and very widely used means of food control systems. The confidence of consumers in the safety and quality of their food supply depends in part on their perception as to the effectiveness of these systems as food control measures. A substantial part of the worldwide trade in food depends upon the use of inspection and certification systems. Following the FAO/WHO Conference of Food Standards, Chemicals in Food and Food Trade in 1991, the Codex Alimentarius Commission undertook the development of guidance documents for governments and other interested parties on food import and export inspection and certification systems. This fifth edition includes texts adopted by the Codex Alimentarius Commission up to 2011."--Page [4] of cover.

Book Description
This FAO manual on Risk based imported food control aims to support competent authorities in improving the effectiveness of the control measures they are overseeing, based on an analysis of their specific country situation. It discusses the different types of approach to managing risks related to imported food, and provides concrete illustrations of how Codex guidelines can be implemented in different ways. While respecting the principles, guidance and objectives agreed by the Codex Alimentarius Commission, different options for control measures can be selected and combined to implement a coherent set of import controls to best fit the needs of each country. Different examples, as implemented by a number of countries, are provided to show that there are often several options to reach a common goal. It also provides insights on the legal and institutional frameworks, as well as on the necessary support services to effectively implement risk based food controls.

Book Description
Food safety has become a major concern for consumers in the developed world and Europe in particular. This has been highlighted by the recent spate of food scares ranging from the BSE (mad cow) crisis to Chinese melamine contamination of baby formula. To ensure food safety throughout Europe, stringent food safety standards have been put in place ‘from farm to fork’. At the same time, poor African countries in the COMESA rely on their food exports to the European market to achieve their development goals yet have difficulty meeting the EU food safety standards. This book examines the impact of EU food safety standards on food imports from COMESA countries. It also critically examines both EU and COMESA food safety standards in light of the WTO SPS Agreement and the jurisprudence of the WTO panels and Appellate Body. The book makes ground-breaking proposals on how the standards divide between the EU and the COMESA can be bridged and discusses the impact of EU food safety standards on food imports from poor African countries.

The first volume to thoroughly address health concerns in the aquaculture industry Aquaculture-farming aquatic plants and organisms-is one of the fastest growing sectors of agriculture, yet attention to aquaculture health concerns has not been equal to the rate of the industry's expansion. Public, Animal, and Environmental Aquaculture Health Issues serves as a valuable guide to new enterprises, regulatory agencies, and government agencies that are concerned with safe, controlled aquaculture development. The majority of aquaculture products pose no significant health risk; however, like traditional farming operations, aquaculture has associated risks to employees, animals, the environment, and the consumer. This book addresses potential unanticipated risks from the perspectives of both industrialized and nonindustrialized countries, as well as how to mitigate these risks. Chapters include: * Status of World Fisheries and the Role of Aquaculture * Aquaculture Associated Public, Animal, and Environmental Health Issues in Nonindustrialized and Industrialized Countries * Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point and Aquaculture * Aquaculture and International Trade Regulations * Future Considerations of Global Aquaculture Aquaculture business owners, managers, producers, manufacturers, research and academic scientists, government officials, consultants, and food safety specialists will find Public, Animal, and Environmental Aquaculture Health Issues to be a valuable addition to their professional libraries.
