Minority and Indigenous Trends 2020 - Focus on technology
Author: Peter Grant
Publisher: Minority Rights Group
ISBN: 1912938243
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 196
Book Description
Technology increasingly permeates every aspect of our lives, from the use of big data to information and communication technologies (ICTs) to artificial intelligence (AI) and automation. These developments are often framed around issues such as efficiency, speed and innovation, but for minorities, indigenous peoples and other marginalized groups there are often very different forces at play – the replication of existing patterns of exclusion in new forms. While a central aim of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) was to reduce social inequalities within societies, the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic has highlighted how profound the gap remains for minorities and indigenous peoples in many countries. Though there is much hope and uncertainty around the possibilities of ‘track and trace’ mobile applications and other emerging technologies to resolve the crisis, without a firm commitment to social justice and universal access it is likely that many will be denied their benefits. With minorities and indigenous peoples disproportionately represented among the world’s poor, it is not surprising that poverty is itself a major barrier to these groups accessing mobile phones, computers and other technologies. Besides the issue of affordability, there may be physical and geographic constraints, particularly for communities in rural or remote locations. In addition, other hurdles such aslimited information in minority or indigenous languages can compound lack of access. For marginalized groups within minority and indigenous communities, such as persons with disabilities, further significant issues arise — for instance, whether websites are accessible and compatible with assistive technologies. The need for a more holistic approach to technology is therefore more urgent than ever, with an emphasis not only on affordable pricing and accessible delivery, but also culturally appropriate and inclusive design. Importantly, an inclusive approach to technology should translate not only to equitable access as users but also meaningful participation in their development. At present, however, minority and indigenous employment in sectors such as computing remains low. This poses a fundamental challenge to the creation of more diverse technologies downstream.

Innovations in Older Adult Care and Health Service Management: A Focus on the Asia-Pacific Region
Author: Madhan Balasubramanian
Publisher: Frontiers Media SA
ISBN: 2832544606
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 147
Book Description
Population aging is a consistent global demographic trend. The growth in both the size and proportion of older adults has threatened the sustainability of health systems in meeting healthcare needs of the population. Countries in the Asia-Pacific Region may face even more complex health system challenges due to the diversity in culture, management and leadership styles, composition of health service provision, investment in research infrastructure and innovation adaptation, data availability, and gaps in information technology. The Asia-Pacific is home to more than half of the world’s population and comprises countries across five Asia-Pacific subregions: East and North-East Asia, North and Central Asia, Pacific, South East Asia, South, and South West Asia. The economies are diverse, including six high-income countries (such as Australia, Brunei, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, and Singapore), low-income countries (Nepal and North Korea), and middle-income countries. The region also includes some of the fastest-growing economies in the world, including China, India, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines.

Global Pension Challenges
Author: Patrick J. Ring
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1040004563
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 174
Book Description
National pension systems face a range of tough social and economic demands and pressures. These are complex to navigate, especially in a twenty-first century world that has ushered in global uncertainty and pressing challenges - even threatening the planet’s very sustainability – with implications for pensions that policymakers, financial services providers and individuals themselves must address. This book probes, and unpacks, what pension systems aim to achieve, the uncertainties they face and how they are attempting to resolve them. Analysing pension provision from the systemic, political-economy and individual perspectives, it sets out and contextualises commonalities and differences in pension systems across the globe, looking at current developments in both public and private pension provision, structures and regulation. Moreover, the reader is encouraged to question how national pension systems can best serve their populations and ensure the ‘sustainability’ of later-life incomes in the light of today’s global pension challenges. Global Pension Challenges: Pensions, Saving and Retirement in the Twenty‐First Century is an essential read for business, finance and social-policy academics and students, those working in the pensions industry and in the areas of welfare reform and advocacy, as well as the general public wishing to know more about the retirement issues we will all face in the coming years.
