Flow
Author: Mitchell Ohriner
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0190670436
Category : Music
Languages : en
Pages : 297
Book Description
From its dynamic start at dance parties in the South Bronx in the late 1970s, hip hop and rap music have exploded into a dominant style of popular music in the United States and a force for activism and expression all over the world. So, too, has scholarship on hip hop and rap music grown. Yet much of this scholarship, employing methods drawn from sociology and literature, leaves unaddressed the expressive musical choices made by hip hop artists. Fundamental among these choices is the rhythm of the rapping voice, termed "flow." Flow presents unique theoretical and analytical challenges. It is rhythmic in the same way other music is rhythmic, but also in the way speech and poetry are rhythmic. For the first time, Mitchell Ohriner's Flow: The Rhythmic Voice in Rap Music reconciles approaches to key concepts of rhythm, such as meter, periodicity, patterning, and accent, treated independently across other branches of scholarship. Ohriner theorizes flow by weaving between the methods of computational music analysis and humanistic close reading. Through the analysis of large collections of verses and individual tracks, the book addresses theories of rhythm, meter, and groove in the unique ecology of rap music. In a series of case studies in the second half, the work of Eminem clarifies how flow can relate to text, the work of Black Thought of The Roots clarifies how flow can relate to other instrumental streams, and the work of Talib Kweli clarifies how flow can relate to rap's persistent meter. While Ohriner focuses on rap music throughout the book, the methods he introduces will be useful for other musical genres that feature the voice freely interacting with a more rigid metric framework.

The Anti-Bible
Author: Ivan Green
Publisher: Strategic Book Publishing
ISBN: 1634102339
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 466
Book Description
The Anti-Bible is exactly what the name implies. It will take readers on a journey through all 66 books of the New International Version of the Holy Bible, exposing all the lies, exaggerations, contradictions, violence, hatred, absurdities, and immorality contained within. It will also show analyses of the Dead Sea Scrolls and Gnostic texts, pieces of original scriptures that were left out of modern publications. These will show even more contradictions and fairy tales, proving that the entire collection is man-made and engineered to manipulate and control the uninformed. Primarily, this book will serve as a reference for atheists in debates with Christians about nearly every part of the Bible. Secondarily, it could also become a steppingstone for Christians who may be questioning and/or doubting their faith, and who need a bit of help getting over that final existential hump, as it were. There has been an extreme invasion of religion (mainly Christianity in the U.S.A.) into the lives of atheists. The prominence of religious ignorance in the American government specifically, has forced violent and hateful dogma into laws, schools, doctor offices, and bedrooms. This book provides a creative and peaceful protest against those actions. Amen!

Your Own Song to Sing (Volume 2)
Author: Saverio
Publisher: Xlibris Corporation
ISBN: 1456887734
Category : Music
Languages : en
Pages : 397
Book Description
Writing has taken over my life.. in a good way. My thoughts continually are geared towards my next song. Sometimes I get a few lines in my head when I am driving and I have to pull over the car and write them down! No matter where I am, I get the urge to write. I could be talking to a neighbor, or be in the middle of mass at church and a word or phrase will pop into my head and whoa! -a new song is born! More than anything I love, love, love, the peace of mind songwriting allows me to have. Most of my lyrics take me 15 to 30 minutes to write. There was a time when I was writing 6-8 lyrics in a day. Sometimes I would sit there and stare at my pencil asking why did you stop? I swear at times the pencil kept moving like I wasnt even thinking of what to write. This is my first edition. I hope to continue with future editions as I am still writing new songs everyday. Someday I hope to put my lyrics to my own music and I recently started taking piano lessons. Hey, we all know life is a learning process; a learning curve, we need to experience the turns with the ride! I wish you all success with this book and look forward to seeing some of you with me when it comes to award times!
