Book Description
Excerpt from Fletcher Family History: The Descendants of Robert Fletcher of Concord, Mass The place of his settlement was a tract which, or at least a part of which, was embraced within the limits of Concord, the first inland town of Massachusetts, upon its incorporation five years later. There is a family tradition that Robert was accompanied by a brother named William and the town records of Middle ton, Conn., give the marriage of Rev. Samuel Stowe to Hope, daughter of William Fletcher, Esq., of Chelmsford, in 1649. As Chelmsford was not incorporated till five years later than that time, there must be some doubt of the correctness of the entry in all its particulars; and as his name is not otherwise found recorded, the probability is, that, if there was such a brother, he left no male issue. That Robert was a man of some distinction, is very certain from direct traditional ac counts, and also from the public records. The only public office he is known to have held was that of constable, to which he was elected in 1637, and from which he was formally dis charged in 1639, in the language of the record not being found faulty. His sons Samuel, born 1632, and Francis, born 1636, and possibly his daughter Cary or Caroline, were the first Americans born of our family.
