The word ""Flemish"" refers to the people living in the North of Belgium and France and the South of the Netherlands. The Flemish, also called ""Flemings,"" are of Germanic (Frank) origin. When the Franks invaded what is now Belgium, they settled between the sea and the ""charcoal forest,"" a dense old-growth forest of beech and oak, which extended to the Rhine and formed a natural boundary during the Late Iron Age through Roman times into the Early Middle Ages. The county of Flanders was created 864 when the French king Charles the Bald granted it as a fief to his son-in-law Baldwin with the Iron Arm. Flanders was a part of France but distinguished itself from the rest of the country with its Germanic Flemish population and close economic ties to England. Unlike other French fiefs it was never returned to the French king's control, instead Flanders became a part of the duke of Burgundy's possessions in 1384, which would evolve into present day Belgium.

The novels of Daniel Defoe are set in years during which two Anglo-Dutch wars were fought, a Dutch king took over the English throne, and the primacy of the Dutch in Northern European commerce was in the process of being overtaken by the English. At the time of these novels’ publication, the geo-physical, political and cultural achievements of the United Provinces were still remarked upon as extraordinary, while so many people had travelled between the two countries that Dutch communities in England and English communities in the United Provinces were unremarkable. Defoe’s personal, professional and political interests lay parallel and very close to stereotypically Dutch affairs, such as tolerance of dissenting Christianity, the promotion of trade as the source of a country’s wealth, and Court Whig (specifically Williamite) interests. In spite of this, the many Dutch elements in his novels are not always evident, and the body of his fiction has not previously been examined from this perspective. Defoe and the Dutch: Places, Things, People explores what English readers of seventeenth and early eighteenth century English fiction and non-fiction knew about the Dutch, what images of the Dutch they were exposed to, and what significance these images may have had. Against that background, it investigates how Dutch elements are used or referred to in nine novels attributed to Daniel Defoe. From the ubiquity of Dutch ships and the Dutch bill of exchange to the disallowing of Dutch martial heroism and the exchange of gifts in Dutch weddings, images and associations of Dutch places, things and people in Defoe’s novels are woven into the fabric of the narratives. Medieval records give evidence of only two genetically distinct families by the name of Fleming. The progenitor of one of these families was, according to ancient tradition, a Flemish nobleman who lived in Danish occupied Pomerania in the late twelfth century. The factual identity of this "first Fleming" has never been discovered in the primary sources of medieval history. The progenitor of the other of these two Fleming families was-again according to tradition-a Flemish nobleman who came to England with William the Conqueror. In the case of this family, ancient tradition is borne out by ancient documents, which are the sources for the family history that is reviewed in this publication. Erkenbald the Fleming, enumerated in Domesday Book as Erchenbaldus, was in 1086 the tenant of a number of feudal estates in Devonshire and Cornwall. This companion of the Conqueror was almost certainly known to the French-speaking Normans in eleventh-century England as Archambaud le Flemynge. Many of his innumerous descendants are readily identified as such by their surname, including Christopher Fleming, 16th Baron Slane, the young Anglo-Irish army officer who fought at the side of the deposed King James II at the battle of the Boyne in 1691. The information gathered in this publication will be of interest to students of medieval history and prosopography as well as to the thousands of modern-day Flemings who would like to know more about their ancestral family.
