The facts and figures upon which this study is based are taken almost entirely from publications of the United States Government, and the object has been to tell the story, so far as is possible, in the words of the government experts. Book Description
Excerpt from Manual of Flax Culture, Comprising Full Information on the Cultivation, Management, and Marketing of the Crop: Together With a Complete Glossary and Index Eradicating small weeds before Sow ing. - After the soil has been well prepared for the seed, let it remain about ten days, when nearly all the seeds of noxious weeds will have vegetated. N ow, on the day that the seed is to be sowed, give it a thorough harrowing, for the purpose of destroying the little weeds that have appeared in the seed-leaf. If many lumps of earth, or small stones are harrowed up, the sur face must be rolled. And while the surface is fresh, let the seed be put in as speedily as possi ble, because flax seed, or any other seed, will germinate much sooner thus, than if put into soil that has not been disturbed for a number of days.
