Book Description
What does it take to squeeze into a second skin you think you want? And when you find you can’t breathe, who’s going to help you peel it off? In a celebrity-obsessed culture, when media images of women ( and women themselves ) appear to be driven by unreasonable expectations and demands, how does a 29-year-old woman fill that perfect little black dress? These questions are posed and answered in Roxane Ward’s debut novel, Fits Like a Rubber Dress, a hybrid of satire, social commentary, and tragedy. It’s the story of Indigo Blackwell, a woman who tries to reinvent herself as someone glamorous, and ends up travelling innocently through the underground world of drugs, fetish parties, and sadomasochistic sex. Indigo is married to Sam, a self-absorbed wannabe novelist. She’s bored by her career in public relations. The lives her friends lead are profoundly more interesting than her own limited existence. She realizes, the afternoon of her promotion, that the time has come for change: something bigger than a haircut, less extreme than a divorce. No sooner has she made the leap from financial security to the exhilarating uncertainty of film school, than she walks in the back door of her house, video camera in hand, to find another man’s head between her husband’s naked thighs. The camera keeps rolling as Indigo’s marriage dissolves. Alone for the first time, Indigo finds herself propelled into the kind of intense, urban life she’s always wanted. She begins an affair with Jon, a toxic young artist who treats his own life and the people in it as he would a sculpture, as things to manipulate. Fast approaching thirty, Indigo discovers that her new life doesn’t have to fit so tightly after all.

Language "Appealing As Sunlight After a Storm." A sentence should read as if its author, had he held a plough instead of a pen, could have drawn a furrow deep and straight to the end. —Henry David Thoreau Prose consists of ... phrases tacked together like the sections of a prefabricated hen-house. —George Orwell Whether it invokes hard work or merely a hen-house, a good simile is like a good picture—it's worth a thousand words. Packed with more than 16,000 imaginative, colorful phrases—from “abandoned as a used Kleenex” to “quiet as an eel swimming in oil”—the Similes Dictionary will help any politician, writer, or lover of language find just the right saying, be it original or banal, verbose or succinct. Your thoughts will never be "as tedious as a twice-told tale" or "dry as the Congressional Record." Choose from elegant turns of phrases “as useful as a Swiss army knife” and “varied as expressions of the human face”. Citing more than 2,000 sources—from the Bible, Socrates, Shakespeare, Mark Twain, and H. L. Mencken to popular movies, music, and television shows—the Similes Dictionary covers hundreds of subjects broken into thematic categories that include topics such as virtue, anger, age, ambition, importance, and youth, helping you find the fitting phrase quickly and easily. Perfect for setting the atmosphere, making a point, or helping spin a tale with economy, intelligence, and ingenuity, the vivid comparisons found in this collection will inspire anyone. One a penny, two a penny, hot cross buns. If you have no daughters, give them to your sons. In this, the first of The Number Mysteries, Doug Hammand is found filleted in the frozen flounder section of McCutty's Market with a coded message pinned to his one good suit and a cowberry necklace wound tightly about his throat. The deranged, love-sick killer challenges syndicated numerologist Samantha Blackwell to a duel of the minds before he fillets again. Bonus: Your personal cycle in the Addendum to One Deadly Rhyme. One Deadly Rhyme is an "...engaging first novel...Bunker mixes the puzzles and suspense with a healthy dose of humor." -Lynn Harnett, Book Reviewer, Sunday Herald "A Real Page-Turner. Sue Grafton move over! I loved this book. Sam is a believable character, with a passion for numerology, writing, and her family. An added bonus: a numerology lesson in the back of the book." -Catherine Ward ([email protected]) "Congratulations, Dusty. It's a winner! Dusty adds such life to her characters...especially Samantha. I loved this (book)." -Millicent Hart, romance novelist
