Book Description
'It was long ago, and long ago it was; and if I'd been there, I wouldn't be here now; if I were here, and then to be now, I'd be an old storyteller, whose story might have been improved by time, could he remember it.' ..So begins the latest work of the writer of whom Charles Simic has said: 'He is one of the best poets we have on both sides of the Atlantic and the publication of every one of his books is a major event in both our literatures.' In the way it dazzles us with a weave of narratives, Fishing for Amber surpasses Carson's previous book, The Star Factory; in the sheer pleasure it takes in stories it is at least the equal of Last Night's Fun, his first prose work. In form it is a kind of magic alphabet, from A-Z, with the subjects drawn from chillingly comic Irish fairy tales; from Ovid's Metamorphoses; and from the history of the Dutch Golden Age, the time of Vermeer the painter of light and Van Leeuwenhoek the inventor of microscopes. These three strands of - fiction? fable? - are united by the author's wonder at the preservation and enrichment of stories by time, and the transformation of vision by art. ..'Fishing for Amber is smoky, mecurial, tale telling and magnificent.' Independent on Sunday ..'This book is to be read for the sheer, idle, provoking pleasure of reading it.' Sunday Business Post ..'Beautifully written.to be consumed slowly and savoured rather than gulped down like a novel.' Image Magazine ..'This is a beautiful and bewitching book. It is funny and witty and enthralling.' Irish News

Book Description
The Olmec who anciently inhabited Mexico's southern Gulf Coast organized their once-egalitarian society into chiefdoms during the Formative period (1400 BC to AD 300). This increase in political complexity coincided with the development of village agriculture, which has led scholars to theorize that agricultural surpluses gave aspiring Olmec leaders control over vital resources and thus a power base on which to build authority and exact tribute. In this book, Amber VanDerwarker conducts the first multidisciplinary analysis of subsistence patterns at two Olmec settlements to offer a fuller understanding of how the development of political complexity was tied to both agricultural practices and environmental factors. She uses plant and animal remains, as well as isotopic data, to trace the intensification of maize agriculture during the Late Formative period. She also examines how volcanic eruptions in the region affected subsistence practices and settlement patterns. Through these multiple sets of data, VanDerwarker presents convincing evidence that Olmec and epi-Olmec lifeways of farming, hunting, and fishing were driven by both political and environmental pressures and that the rise of institutionalized leadership must be understood within the ecological context in which it occurred.

Book Description
Abandoned pregnant and penniless on the teeming streets of London, 16-year-old Amber St. Clare manages, by using her wits, beauty, and courage, to climb to the highest position a woman could achieve in Restoration England—that of favorite mistress of the Merry Monarch, Charles II. From whores and highwaymen to courtiers and noblemen, from events such as the Great Plague and the Fire of London to the intimate passions of ordinary—and extraordinary—men and women, Amber experiences it all. But throughout her trials and escapades, she remains, in her heart, true to the one man she really loves, the one man she can never have. Frequently compared to Gone with the Wind, Forever Amber is the other great historical romance, outselling every other American novel of the 1940s—despite being banned in Boston for its sheer sexiness. A book to read and reread, this edition brings back to print an unforgettable romance and a timeless masterpiece.

Book Description
Do you hear the beasts scratching at the door? They’ve been sleeping too long, and now they’re getting feisty. Don’t be afraid, they’re pretty lovely inside. And never did I see a more pretty beast than you. Do you ever wonder how to be wild & free again? There is beauty in being a human, too. With a heart to feel, a mind to learn & hands to build extraordinary things. Go forth, fiercely, bravely. Through a mash-up of poetry, fables, comic fiction and whimsical watercolor illustrations, this beautiful book weaves a narrative of how we can all become wild and free again. Looking at life through the eyes of Sloth, Bear, Koala, and even Blob Fish, these animals tell the stories of the raw beauty of life on our planet, encouraging us to let go of fear, stick our fingers/paws up at societal pressure, and accept our beautifully flawed bodies and minds to empower us to love ourselves and one another with abandon.

Book Description
'An emotionally gripping and page-turning read' SYDNEY MORNING HERALD Six years ago, Mischa Reese left her abusive husband and suffocating life in California and reinvented herself in steamy, chaotic Hanoi. In Vietnam, she finds satisfying work and enjoys a life of relative luxury and personal freedom. Thirty-five and single, Mischa believes that romance and passion are for teenagers; a view with which her cynical, promiscuous expat friends agree. But then a friend introduces Mischa to his visiting eighteen-year-old son. Cal is a strikingly attractive Vietnamese-Australian boy, but he's resentful of his father, and of the nation which has stolen him away. His beauty and righteous idealism awaken something in Mischa and the two launch into an affair that threatens Mischa's friendships and reputation and challenges her sense of herself as unselfish and good. Set among the louche world of Hanoi's expatriate community, Fishing for Tigers is about a woman struggling with the morality of finding peace in a war-haunted city, personal fulfilment in the midst of poverty and sexual joy with a vulnerable youth. ' Fishing for Tigers is a sharply observed novel, both page-turning and thought-provoking. It vividly evokes the particular beauty of Hanoi, the intoxication of being a stranger, and the danger of desire.' NEWTOWN REVIEW OF BOOKS
