Cooperative Research in the National Marine Fisheries Service
Author: National Research Council
Publisher: National Academies Press
ISBN: 0309090741
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 147
Book Description
In recent years there has been growing interest in having fisheries stakeholders involved in various aspects of fisheries data collection and experimentation. This activity is generally known as cooperative research and may take many forms, including gear technology studies, bycatch avoidance studies, and surveys. While the process is not new, the current interest in cooperative research and the growing frequency of direct budgetary allocation for cooperative research prompted this report. Cooperative Research in the National Marine Fisheries Service addresses issues essential for the effective design and implementation of cooperative and collaborative research programs.

The Ownership and Management of Fishery Research Vessels
Author: G. C. Eddie
Publisher: Food & Agriculture Org.
ISBN: 9789251013748
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 60
Book Description
The very high costs of owning fishery research vessels make it especially desirable to ensure that value is obtained for the money spent, in terms of sea time achieved and information produced. The authorities who own and manage such vessels face a number of peculiar problems in their design, procurement and operation which may not be easily solved by applying normal administrative principles and procedures. Factors affecting vessel availability and utilization, such as crew incentives and financial control of normal maintenance, are discussed, together with safety, insurance, legal matters, sale of catches and other methods open to the fisheries authorities for acquiring information and experience that do not involve the ownership of a specialized research vessel.

Microhematocrit as a Tool in Fishery Research and Management
Author: Stanislas F. Snieszko
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Fisheries
Languages : en
Pages : 1068
Book Description
Abstract: The micro method of hematocrit is rapidly replacing red cell counts in clinical hematology. Observations were made on the value of this method in routine hematological examination of trouts. Under the conditions of data collection, the normal hematocrit values for brook trout were 45 to 50, for brown trout 39 to 44, and for rainbow trout 45 to 53. There was a close correlation between the hematocrits, red cell counts and hemoglobin. The commercial heparinized capillaries, while excellent for human blood, tend to give somewhat higher readings (7 to 18 percent) with trout, due to incomplete prevention of blood coagulation. The procedure as applied to trout is described in detail.
