Book Description
In fisheries science and management, it is not uncommon that fishery data are used at “face value”, as inputs into data-limited assessments or empirical indicator-based frameworks for management, without first conducting a thorough exploration and critical review of the data. [Author] This practice may lead to biases in results and misdirected fishery management actions. [Author] To address intermediate steps between data collection and any analysis used to inform stock status, this manual provides guidance on how to prepare, explore and critically review fishery data in data-limited situations. [Author] Throughout the manual, guidance and sample data are provided primarily in Microsoft Excel or in comma separated value (CSV) file formats, as well as through FishualizeR, a publicly available, web-based, R Shiny app that was developed to support the manual. [Author] Instructions in this manual are not intended to present a single, prescriptive path, but rather to provide guidance that may be further tailored to each individual context. [Author] It is the authors’ hope and intent that the guidance contained in this manual will allow users to better understand their data, make corrections, and gain a deeper understanding of the data’s utility in assessment and management of data-limited fisheries. Book Description
The symposium Assessment and Management of New and Developed Fisheries in Data-limited Situations, held October 22-25, 2003, in Anchorage, Alaska, brought together scientists, fishery managers, and policy makers to share research information on the management of newly developing and small-scale fisheries with limited data. Forty-six peer-reviewed research papers provide scientific background for possible new fisheries worldwide. Contributions include new applications of production models, new assessment techniques requiring meager data, and creative fishery management schemes. As most of the worlds large marine fisheries are fully exploited or overfished, new fisheries are critical to meet the global demand for seafood products.

Book Description
This manual deals with the practical implementation of a routine data collection programme. The data collection programme is developed through a top-down approach, from the identification of the objectives down to the practical recording and management of data obtained from the fishery. The issues are dealth with both through detailed discussion and by using simple examples. The examples are mostly based on situations in tropical fisheries, and in particular, experience has been drawn from developing a data collection programme in Viet Nam. The main questions addressed i n the manual are which fisheries data to collect, where and when to collect them. Only data from commercial marine capture fisheries are considered. The methodologies used are mainly appropriate for a tropical, developing county, with many small (artisanal) vessels and a few large (industrial) vessels. The methodology is the "sample-based approach". The data collection methodology presented attempts to utilize whatever information can be obtained in practice in a developing country.

Book Description
This timely book brings readers up to date on the wide range of advances made in fisheries science since the publication in 1957 of On the Dynamics of Exploited Fish Populations (Beverton and Holt), regarded by many fisheries scientists as one of the most important books on fisheries yet published. Traditional fishery subjects covered include historic declines and changes in fishing fleets, fisheries management and stock assessments, data-poor situations, simulation and modelling of fished stocks, fisheries economics, assessing reproductive potential and dispersal of larvae, fisheries for sharks and rays, and use of marine technology. Additionally, related subjects of increasing importance now that ecological approaches to management are coming to the fore are presented. They include benthic ecology, ecosystem changes linked to fishing, life history theory, the effects of chemicals on fish reproduction, and use of sounds in the sea by marine life. Several chapters offer stimulating philosophical discussion of the many controversial areas still existing. This significant book, edited by Andy Payne, John Cotter and Ted Potter and containing contributions by world-renowned fisheries scientists, including many based at Cefas (where Beverton and Holt's original work was carried out) is an essential purchase for fisheries managers and scientists, fish biologists, marine scientists and ecologists. Libraries in all universities and research establishments where fisheries and biological sciences are studied and taught are likely to need copies of this landmark publication.

Book Description
Ocean harvests have plateaued worldwide and many important commercial stocks have been depleted. This has caused great concern among scientists, fishery managers, the fishing community, and the public. This book evaluates the major models used for estimating the size and structure of marine fish populations (stock assessments) and changes in populations over time. It demonstrates how problems that may occur in fisheries dataâ€"for example underreporting or changes in the likelihood that fish can be caught with a given type of gearâ€"can seriously degrade the quality of stock assessments. The volume makes recommendations for means to improve stock assessments and their use in fishery management.
