In this respect they contrast sharply with the fisheries of New England and the Pacific Coast, where the typical operating unit is a large company, with financial stability and large re sources of material and equipment. The only important exceptions to the lack of organization in the Mid dle Atlantic area are the menhaden fishery, dominated by several large companies owning chains of fac tories and many boats, and the oyster industry of Long Island Sound and sections of New Jersey and Virginia.
