Book Description
Excerpt from First Steps to Zoology All these animals it is the business of the zoologist to divide into groups, so that those may be placed together which are alike, and those may be separated, more or less remotely, which are different. The task is one that no single individual could accomplish by his own efforts 3 but it has been done by the combined and successive labours of many. In this way the entire animal kingdom has been divided into a number of great groups, distinguished from one another by peculiarities of structure. Book Description
Excerpt from General Principles Zoology But meanwhile the subject of Zoology has widened 1, for, apart from its relations to man, Zoology has to explain the organization of animals and their relations to one another. This is a rich field for scientific activity; its enormous range is a consequence, on the one hand, of the well-nigh exhaustless variety of animal organization, and, on the other hand, of the different points of view from which the zoologist enters upon the solution of his problem. Book Description
Excerpt from Essentials of Zoology: For Students of Medicine and First Year Students of Science Whether the student is to specialise in Medicine or Agri culture or is to pursue a course in Pure Science, his knowledge of Zoology must be founded upon and can only be obtained by personal enquiry with reference to a series of types. The types are selected with a view to his finding out for himself the more important facts of comparative anatomy, physiology and embryology, gaining practice in methods of study, and forming an acquaintance with the literature of the subject. These are the essentials, and Should be conveyed by the teacher without undue bias as to the future studies of the student, and without particular reference to the problems which happen to be the fashion of the moment. This work is arranged as a guide to the student in acquiring this essential fundamental knowledge. The types chosen are those used in the majority of the Universities and Schools, or are nearly allied to them. More are described than teachers have time usually to accomplish in the First Year but in this respect it will meet the requirements of teachers who have the Opportunity of adopting the recommendation Of the General Medical Council that specialised instruction in Biology in its application to Medicine should be included in the medical curriculum. The types are arranged in zoological sequence, and tables are given to indicate their systematic position. Nevertheless, the description of each is complete enough to permit the study commencing with reference to any one of them. The types selected, moreover, are generally distributed, or allied forms may be readily procured, so that the book may be used by students in other countries. Book Description
Excerpt from First Lessons in Zoology: Adapted for Use in Schools The study of nature is the study of everything about us which we can perceive by our senses. Every object which we can see on the earth is either a mineral or a living body. Mineral bodies are not only stones, crystals, or sand, but they include the air, water, and gases. Minerals do not live; they are lifeless bodies, while plants and animals are living bodies. The study of natural history is the study of minerals and rocks, of plants and animals; or, in other words, of our earth and the minerals composing it, and of the plants and animals which have either once lived or are now living on its surface. Book Description
Excerpt from Outlines of Zoology To numerous authorities I acknowledge an obvious indebtedness, a detailed recognition of which would be out of place in a book of this kind. But I must thank Dr. Ramsay Traquair for helping me with the chapter on Fishes, Dr. Beard for revising the pages on the general structure of Vertebrates, and Dr. Gilchrist for suggestions as to the chapter on Molluscs. For the imperfections in these chapters I am, of course, alone responsible. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from First Lessons in Zoology: Adapted for Use in Schools In our larger museums there have been formed what are called "epitome collections," a single apartment containing a series of examples of the principal classes of the animal kingdom, so that, before entering the museum itself, the visitor may obtain some idea of the principal forms of animal life. This excellent plan has been kept in view in the preparation of these "First Lessons," and followed out as well as circumstances would allow. It differs from the authors two other text-books in Zoology - 1. In treating of still fewer examples or types, omitting representatives of a number of orders and classes described in his larger Zoology. 2. In using fewer technical terms and names. 3. In rendering the book an elementary guide to the principles of Biology, leading the student from facts to the principles, without tiring him with formal, general statements; the latter usually being printed in italics. 4. The subject, as a whole, is given in somewhat smaller compass. No boy or girl should leave school without at least as much knowledge of the life about us and of our own relations to the animal world, as should be found in a book of this sort. The teacher can carry a class through it in thirty days, or extend its use through a term, as the case may require. But this or any other book should not be used without specimens.
