Book Description
Excerpt from First Book in Geology: Designed for the Use of Beginners This First Book of Geology is intended to give the beginner in the study of that science some general ideas concerning the action of those forces that have shaped the earth. Only a very small part of the more important facts that constitute the store of the geologist is given within its pages. The effort of the writer has been to select from that ample store such topics as will give the student an idea of the world as a great workshop, where the geological forces are constantly working towards definite ends. The greatest and most easily seen of these agents is water, therefore the book begins with a study of water in its most simple mode of action. Next, the action of heat, in its various ways of working, should command the student's attention. Finally, the animal and vegetable life of the earth, whose forces come mainly from the action of heat, receive some attention. Book Description
Excerpt from Elementary Geology There are already a number Of good elementary text books on Geology, and at first it may seem that there is no special excuse for the appearance of another elementary work. However, it has seemed to me, for some time, that there is need of a Geology in which more stress is placed upon the dynamic aspect of the subject than is commonly given. Book Description
Excerpt from Geology Will see that they receive various treatment before they become part of a building. The stones of the walls have been chipped and dressed with chisels and hammers the marble of the chimney-pieces has been smoothed and polished; the slates have been split into thin plates. But some of these building mate rials have undergone much greater changes. The bricks, for instance, were originally soft clay which has been hardened by being baked in ovens. The mortar by which the stones or bricks of the walls are held together. Has been obtained by burning limestone in kilns. The iron used in the house was first of all in the state of a dull red or brown stone, which had to be roasted and melted before the clear bright metal came out of it. I 3. But although these various stones differ so much from each other, they agree in one point - they come from underneath the surface of the ground. If you could trace back each of them to the place from which it came you would find that the freestone and limestone were taken out of quarries, perhaps not very far away, that the slates were cut out of the side of some hill, probably in Wales, that the marble was quarried out of some distant moun tain, possibly in Italy, that the coal was dug out of mines, sunk deep into the earth in some part of Bri tain, and that the bricks were made from clay dug out of pits on some low ground in your neighbourhood. Book Description
Excerpt from A Text-Book of Geology Structural geology explains the composition of rocks and the forms in which they occur. Thus some rocks are sandstones or limestones, others are slates or schists, and others are ancient or modern lavas. These occur in beds or masses of many kinds, and have often been folded, broken, or otherwise changed. As a result of composition, structure, and dynamic changes we have land forms, the study of which is included in Part II.
