Book Description
This in-depth scale and arpeggio text is core curriculum at the University of Southern California's Studio Guitar Department. Using a comprehensive approach that includes three different organizational systems, it covers the technical foundation that is necessary for playing any style of music. The CAGED system (five positions), the Finger Stretch system (all twelve keys in one position) and theThree-Note Per String system (seven patterns) are examined. Although each of these three systems is examined, the CAGED system serves as the basis for much of the material covered in this book. Instead of traditional musical notation, the book uses fingerboard diagrams to focus on the visual aspect of the patterns. The goal is to present an approach to understanding and mastering the fingerboard by outlining the best and most practical elements of these different systems. Book Two presents patterns for the harmonic minor and melodic minor scales and all of their relative modes: the bebop scale (major, minor and dominant), chromatic scale, whole-tone scale, diminished scale (whole/half and half/whole) and augmented scale. Along with these scale forms, patterns for minor (major 7) and augmented (major 7) arpeggios are presented

Book Description
Arpeggios are chord notes played one at a time rather than strummed or plucked all together. They are an essential part of great improvising and melody writingbecause playing chord notes in the right places creates solid melody lines. Chord notes sound more resolved than notes that are chromatic (out of the key). Practicing arpeggios will improve your ability to learn melodies, make reading music easier, and develop your tone and picking accuracy. The first part of thisbook focuses on the basic fingerings of the folliowing six arpeggios: major 7th,major 7th (#5), dominant 7th, minor 7th, minor 7th (b5), and diminished 7th. This book along with its accompanying audio represents a comprehensive guide to all things arpeggio. It delves into traditional applications of arpeggios, as well as howthey relate to slash chords, modal music and more. The student will learn about how arpeggios fall over standard chord progressions, as well as how to embellisharpeggios to make them more musical in performance situations. 262 Scales Starting On Every Note - In Every Key - Plus Triad Arpeggios for each Scale Right Hand Arpeggio Exercises Chord Diagrams for all Scales and Modes Extended 2 + Octave Arpeggio Exercises The major and melodic minor scales are the underlying foundations of most of the musical passages that we play. They are present in classical music, folk music, popular music and jazz. To play an instrument well, including guitar, it helps to become adept at playing the major and minor scales in any key, better still, starting on any note in any key. The concepts behind this book are founded on the essential building blocks used by composers of all music. I have found that these exercises, when practiced regularly on guitar, develop both theoretical understanding and technical ability. I hope they will be useful to you as you grow through your exploration of music. Karl Wolff - Ithaca, NY - September 2002
