There were no woven stockings in England prior to the reign of Queen Elizabeth. The art of knitting stock ings is supposed by some to have originated in Scotland, about a.d. 1500. Howell's History of the World, printed in 1680, says that Henry the Eighth wore cloth stock ing: except there came from Spain by chance a pair of sil stockings. Spain therefore claims the art.
