Book Description
A New York Times–bestselling author and former Los Angeles Times reporter chronicles the marriage between a Christian woman and an ex-con that ends in murder. When Carol Montecalvo began writing to a man in prison through a program at her church, she considered it her Christian duty. But the letters soon became her lifeline, something she actually looked forward to sending and receiving. She fell in love with the man behind the letters and just before Dan was released, they wed in the prison chapel. Their marriage lasted nine years, until the fateful night when Dan stoically called 911 to report his wife’s murder. With a half-million dollar insurance policy riding on his wife’s death, and a string of adulterous affairs in his past, Dan is the most obvious suspect. But is this former felon really guilty? Or could he actually be a grieving widower, in the wrong place at the wrong time? In this powerful true crime account of the gruesome murder and sensational trial that followed, New York Times–bestselling author Karen Kingsbury weaves an emotional story that leaves readers guessing until the final, harrowing conclusion.

Book Description
The experience of becoming an ex is common to most people in modern society. Unlike individuals in earlier cultures who usually spent their entire lives in one marriage, one career, one religion, one geographic locality, people living in today's world tend to move in and out of many roles in the course of a lifetime. During the past decade there has been persistent interest in these "passages" or "turning points," but very little research has dealt with what it means to leave behind a major role or incorporate it into a new identity. Helen Rose Fuchs Ebaugh's pathbreaking inquiry into the phenomenon of becoming an ex reveals the profundity of this basic aspect of establishing an identity in contemporary life. Ebaugh is herself an ex, having left the life of a Catholic nun to become a wife, mother, and professor of sociology. Drawing on interviews with 185 people, Ebaugh explores a wide range of role changes, including ex-convicts, ex-alcoholics, divorced people, mothers without custody of their children, ex-doctors, ex-cops, retirees, ex-nuns, and—perhaps most dramatically—transsexuals. As this diverse sample reveals, Ebaugh focuses on voluntary exits from significant roles. What emerges are common stages of the role exit process—from disillusionment with a particular identity, to searching for alternative roles, to turning points that trigger a final decision to exit, and finally to the creation of an identify as an ex. Becoming an Ex is a challenging and influential study that will be of great interest to sociologists, mental health counselors, members of self-help groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous and Parents Without Partners, those in corporate settings where turnover has widespread implications for the organization, and for anyone struggling through a role exit who is trying to establish a new sense of self.

Book Description
Visit the author's website at www.DutchInk.com After leaving her religious order, in October of 1984, Hilaire had two ambitions: to write a realistic book about convent life and to earn a Ph.D. from the University of South Florida. Working full time as a teacher made her realize one of these ambitions would have to wait, so after starting her book, Nun of This and Nun of That, she set it aside for the next eight years until she earned her doctorate. Her novel spans almost ten years of religious life, starting in 1963 when twenty-five young women all enter a convent in Albany, New York. This is a story of all the girls, but particularly three who enter, live, stay-in and leave religious life for various reasons. The author invites the reader into the secret cloisters of convent living, beyond the front parlor, once the only space available to visitors. Every life experience is unique to every woman in religious life, but the adventures and journeys of these three girls reveal the joys, sorrows, trials, tribulations, and triumphs of convent living during and after the Second Vatican Council. Dr. Tavenner calls her book, realistic fiction though most of it is based on true stories. Dr. Tavenner living among her community members for almost twenty years, and even while in the convent began the groundwork and outlines for this book. Many may be incensed or indignant of her portrayal of characters, but for the men and women familiar with convent living, the Church and priesthood of the 1960's, Nun of This and Nun of That is deja vu.
