Book Description
The result of a feasibility study of a diagnostic system for the measurement of fusion product alpha particle distribution in ITER is presented. This diagnostic is based on small angle CO2-laser Thomson scattering. This diagnostic system has previously been described and a proof-of-principle measurement has been successfully demonstrated. Our study indicates that for ITER conditions this diagnostic system is capable of providing an accurate measurement of alpha particle parameters.

Book Description
The feasibility of O/sub 2/ laser Thomson scattering from a multicomponent burning plasma has been evaluated for the measurement of the velocity distribution of D-T produced alpha particles. The density and velocity distribution of the alpha particles from their initial energy of 3.5 MeV down to near-thermal energies may be measured by small angle (

Book Description
Fusion-product alpha particles will dominate the behavior of the next generation of ignited D-T fusion reactors. Advanced diagnostics will be required to characterize the energy deposition of these fast alpha particles in the magnetically confined plasma. For small-angle coherent Thomson scattering of a CO/sub 2/ laser beam from such a plasma, a resonance in the scattered power occurs near 90/sup 0/ with respect to the magnetic field direction. This spatial concentration permits a simplified detection of the scattered laser power from the plasma using a heterodyne system. The signal produced by the presence of fusion-product alpha particles in an ignited plasma is calculated to be well above the noise level, which results from statistical variations of the background signal produced by scattering from free electrons. 7 refs.

Book Description
A description of a CO2 laser Thomson scattering diagnostic for fusion alpha particles is presented. Scattering calculations based on CIT plasma parameters are presented and compared to previous work based on TFTR parameters. Systems components are described and a proof-of-principle test in a nonburning plasma is discussed. 8 refs., 3 figs., 1 tab.

Book Description
Technical achievements during the initial budget phase of this study consists of work accomplished under the following categories: (a) Hot Cell Notch Filter; and (b) System Integration. In the two week period just prior to the 1993 shutdown of ATF, the authors were able to make the planned scattering measurement. The experiment was a complete success, and the feasibility of the approach was unambiguously demonstrated. The measurements have been reported in a separate article.
