Book Description
The book is done, it is published and now it is ready for you to read and enjoy my story. I am happy to share my experience growing up on the plains of South Dakota, completing grade school in a one-room school, surviving blizzards, including getting lost in our yard. I have virtually all positive memories, for example I remember being in severe pain, but I don't remember the pain. I can look back and see points where a different decision by me would have changed my life, but not necessarily better for me. Achieving the highest enlisted grade in the Air Force is in ways the culmination of my military career. This career included service as an electronics technician, combat crew member, military training instructor, and scheduler for aircrews, missile crews, and administrative airlift missions within 5th Air Force, and aircraft operations management. I followed the tradition of my late brother Robert in serving a hitch in the military, 3 years for Robert and 30 years for me and then graduating from college. Of course life went on after the Air Force and I have included pictures throughout the time of my story to help you understand my story.

British Military Service Tribunals, 1916–18
Author: James McDermott
Publisher: Manchester University Press
ISBN: 1847797938
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 426
Book Description
Military Service Tribunals were formed following the introduction of conscription in January 1916, to consider applications for exemption from military service. Swiftly, they gained two opposing yet equally unflattering reputations. In the eyes of the military, they were soft, obstructionist ‘old duffers’. To most of the men who came before them, they were the unfeeling civilian arm of a remorseless grinding machine. This work, utilising a rare surviving set of Tribunal records, challenges both perspectives. Wielding unprecedented power yet acutely sensitive to the contradictions inherent in their task, the Tribunals were obliged, often at a conveyer belt’s pace, to make decisions that often determined the fate of men. That some of these decisions were capricious or even wrong is indisputable; the sparse historiography of the Tribunals has too often focused upon the idiosyncratic example while ignoring the wider, impact of imprecise legislation, government hand-washing and short-term military exigencies.

Gender and Agriculture in Turkey
Author: Emine Erdogan
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
ISBN: 0755617924
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 217
Book Description
How have attempts to integrate Turkish agriculture into the global economy impacted rural populations? This book reveals the extent to which the increasingly authoritarian political regime in Turkey, and the neoliberal economy, impacts minority ethnic groups and women. The tomato industry in Turkey has the highest export rate amongst fresh and processed fruit and vegetables. But Emine Erdogan shows here that global production is gendered, relying on the labour of unpaid or poorly paid women and based on a system of what she calls 'intersectional patriarchy'. The book is based on participant observation and interviews to foreground the stories of the those involved in production, including local rural workers, Kurdish seasonal migrant workers, women factory workers and factory managers, as well as the landowning families. This provides a detailed picture of the transformation of rural Turkey and the inequalities of gender, class, ethnicity and age. A detailed ethnographic account, the book in unique in providing an intersectional and feminist analysis on processes of capitalization.

History of the Finns in Michigan
Author: Armas K. E. Holmio
Publisher: Wayne State University Press
ISBN: 0814340008
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 546
Book Description
Michigan's Upper Peninsula was a major destination for Finns during the peak years of migration in the nineteenth century and the early decades of the twentieth century. Several Upper Peninsula communities had large Finnish populations and Finnish churches, lodges, cooperative stores, and temperance societies. Ishpeming and Hancock, especially, were important nationally as Finnish cultural centers. Originally published in Finnish in 1967 by Armas K. E. Holmio, History of the Finns in Michigan, translated into English by Ellen M. Ryynanen, brings the story of the contribution of Finnish immigrants into the mainstream of Michigan history. Holmio combines firsthand experience and personal contact with the first generation of Finnish immigrants with research in Finnish-language sources to create an important and compelling story of an immigrant group and its role in the development of Michigan.
