Little research has been done on faculty attitudes on their advising experience. The current study examined the attitudes of instructional faculty towards their role, responsibility, and competence levels regarding faculty advising in a small, urban university in the southeast United States. The purpose of this research was to investigate and contribute to current research by attempting to better understand faculty attitudes towards their role in developmental student advising. The problem addressed in this study is although effective academic advising is closely linked to students' positive college experience and retention, students continue to report dissatisfaction with the advising they receive as part of their college experience. The theoretical framework for this study lies in Fishbein's Attitude Development Theory as it differentiates among beliefs, attitude, intentions, and behaviors. A quantitative, non experimental, survey research design was used and a mixture of descriptive analyses, repeated measures analyses of variances (ANOVAs), and post-hoc analyses were implemented. This study's data supports the notion that faculty believe that academic advising is an essential part of a student's college experience and that faculty believe they should be responsible and are competent in providing most, if not all, of these advising functions. A greater understanding of faculty attitudes will open the door for discussion and action to enhance design and involvement in developmental programs for faculty advisors. Understanding faculty's attitudes regarding effective student advising will allow institutions to better serve the needs of students and therefore increase student satisfaction.

The purpose of this mixed method phenomenological study is to examine a three-pronged problem of practice in the Notre Dame College (NDC) Division of Professional Education (DOPE). The study addresses that a) there is no specific advising model employed by DOPE, b) there is no codified expectation of the advisors' role and responsibilities, and c) there is a disconnect between student and faculty understanding of the advisor-advisee relationship. A15-item survey tool was administered to all students and faculty advisors in DOPE in early Fall 2021; the results of this survey were analyzed and used to facilitate a semi-structured focus group at the end of the Fall semester. The survey and focus group data revealed that faculty advisors and students had significantly different perceptions about their roles and responsibilities in the advising process, but that both parties desired stronger relationships and opportunities to engage outside of strictly academic events. Using these results, an action plan centered on increasing advisor-advisee engagement and providing faculty advisors with additional support and resources has been designed. While not enacted yet, this study concludes with an implementation plan for these events and resources, as well as expected results from its successful implementation.

The purpose of this study was to examine thoroughly the perception of students and faculty advisors concerning the purpose and practice of the academic advising program at Bethany Bible College, a small, residential, four-year private college in rural New Brunswick. Among the guiding research questions was the determination of whether students and advisors have the same perceptions of the purpose of the College's academic advising program and, following that, the determination of whether or not this purpose is being fulfilled. A survey of all students and advisors revealed that the strength of the program is the relationships built between students and advisors. The weakness is that the benefits of the relationships are not being maximized because there are multiple, limited perceptions of the purpose of the advising program. As a result of the study and, in light of advising theory, a series of recommendations for a more effective program of academic advising has been developed. The greatest need identified is that of a common understanding of the purpose of academic advising. Many of the recommendations focus on providing increased assistance and information for advisors so they can help students more effectively. Whereas these recommendations will be implemented in the coming academic year as a result of this project, their application is beyond the defined scope of the project.
