This book analyses school-based-teacher-evaluation practice in secondary schools in Western Kenya. Teachers are evaluated by management and peers through class observation during instruction and analysis of their professional tools such as schemes of work, lesson guides, records of work covered, lesson notes, learners' exercise books and their portfolios. In this context, the author argues that other than analysis of professional tools, the other modes of teacher evaluation are hardly conducted. Therefore, it is difficult to establish if there is proper curriculum implementation. Consequently, she recommends that head-teachers should enforce observation of teachers during instruction and the government should ensure that all schools are adequately staffed with teachers. Book Description
Performance of pupils at Kenya Certificate of Primary Education examination is an indicator of the efficiency and uniqueness of schools. At primary school level, it determines efficiency in school management and level of transition to secondary school. Study used survey research and population of head-teachers and teachers serving in 248 primary schools both public and private. Sample comprised 56 head-teachers and 56 teachers from 56 schools. Research instruments had reliability at alpha 0.83. Data was analysed through quantitative statistics with aid of SPSS 17.0 for Windows. Study indicated that academic performance in public primary schools was low and had fluctuated over years. Study also indicated deficiency in admission capacity at secondary school. Boarding, private and urban schools performed better and had higher transition rates compared to day, public and rural schools. Study recommended need for enhancement of performance in examinable subjects in order to boost efficiency in transition rates. It also recommended improvement of capacity in secondary schools to admit more students.

Master's Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject Pedagogy - General, grade: B (3.0), , course: Masters of Art in Educational Management, language: English, abstract: The study aimed at investigating on the factors influencing poor performance in science subjects in secondary schools in Shinyanga Municipal Council. The study used survey research design by applying quantitative technique. Six public secondary schools out of eighteen public secondary schools were sampled for the study; it involved 415 respondents. The form four National Examination results for the past five years in selected secondary schools were used to show trend of performance in science subjects. Structured questionnaires were used to obtain information, and the criterion used in sampling was simple random method. The study found out that the factors influences poor performance were; Inadequate number of teachers, Lack of teaching and learning materials, Poor teaching methods (theory) and students’ attitudes towards science subjects. Also the study found out that the suggested solutions to the problem of poor performance in science subjects in secondary schools in Shinyanga municipal council were; presence of adequate teachers, availability of science teaching and learning materials. The study conclude that Scarcity of qualified Science subjects’ teachers and inadequate availability of teaching and learning materials are the major factors influencing poor performance in science subjects in secondary schools in Shinyanga municipality. The study recommends the following; the ministry should ensure enough availability of qualified science subjects’ teachers in secondary schools, and to make sure there is availability of adequate teaching and learning materials like books, teaching aids, specimens, chemicals and laboratory apparatuses, with conducive learning and friendly environment at schools.
