Book Description
The second Rizzoli publication dedicated to an important member of the Mexican and Latin American architectural vanguard, celebrating exceptional craftsmanship and refined sophistication, and guided by the ideals of Mexican modernism. Farca looks to the work of the late design icon Luis Barragán for inspiration, blending tradition with modernity. He focuses on the importance of collaborating with indigenous artisans who work in age-old Mexican crafts, to create environmentally sustainable, indoor/outdoor spaces and furniture with a palette of natural materials, translated through a contemporary luxury lens. This lavish volume features sixteen of his newly built private residences in Mexico and California that show off his spectacular designs for seamless indoor and outdoor living. Notable projects include sun-drenched beach houses in Los Angeles and throughout Mexico that integrate artisanal practices, such as mosaics and patterns of hammered copper, which contribute to the local communities. At the start of any project, Farca and his team undertake a detailed bioclimatic study of a site, documenting the wind, light, and temperature conditions hour to hour and day to day. Those shifts generate the framework for layouts, form, flow, and material choices. At the Los Jales house in Jalisco sun washes deliberately across exterior walls of stucco and cast-in-place concrete, their distinctive surfaces shifting into an immersive tapestry of complementary gray tones, a tableau en grisaille. Beyond the exterior walls the unexpected awaits, be it a sublime courtyard planted with branching cacti; a seamless sweep of pool, surf, and sky; or a floating central staircase bathed in natural light. Step through the front doors and the outside world recedes as textures, surfaces, finishes, and geometries come into focus, inviting exploration and contemplation.

Category : House & Home

Book Description
A lavish volume on the stunning interiors and houses of this award-winning design and architecture firm, best known for its exceptional craftsmanship and refined sophistication drawn from the founders' Mexican heritage. Ezequiel Farca and Cristina Grappin challenge stereotypes and think globally, designing luxury vacation homes in Los Cabos, Puerto Vallarta, Acapulco, and Cancun, Mexico, and more recently Southern California and Europe. Their studio focuses on creating holistic spaces, which are a perfect blend of timeless design and comfortable functionality, using natural materials and elegant details. Understated luxury is a common theme of their residential interiors, with custom-designed furnishings and artisanal pieces sourced from around the world and an emphasis on serenity, simple forms, and a soft, warm palette. Featured are more than sixteen residential and commercial projects, presented up close and with plans, including a mezcal bar located in a landmark building in Oaxaca; a Venice Beach town house designed for the owners' private art collection; and interiors and design of a Benetti Crystal luxury yacht. An interview with Michael Webb reveals the architects' thought processes and influences

Letters to Felice
Author: Franz Kafka
Publisher: Schocken
ISBN: 0805208518
Category : Literary Collections
Languages : en
Pages : 626
Book Description
More than two decades of letters from one of the greatest writers of the twentieth century—the author of The Metamorphosis and The Trial—to the people in his life, from his years as a student in Prague in the early 1900s to his final months in the sanatorium near Vienna where he died in 1924. Sometimes surprisingly humorous, sometimes wrenchingly sad, these letters, collected after Kafka's death by his friend and literary executor Max Brod, include charming notes to school friends; fascinating accounts to Brod about his work in its various stages of publication; correspondence with his publisher, Kurt Wolff, about manuscripts in progress, suggested book titles, type design, and late royalty statements; revealing exchanges with other young writers of the day, including Martin Buber and Felix Weltsch, on life, literature, and girls; and heartbreaking reports to his parents, sisters, and friends on the declining state of his health in the last months of his life.
