Book Description
This vol., while encompassing the entire reign of Louis XIV & all the parlements of the realm, has the narrow focus of investigating the impact of royal policy on the judicial authority of the parlements as revealed in their relations with the king's councils, notably the one that specialized in judicial affairs, the Conseil Prive. This is above all a study of the evolution of conciliar jurisprudence & judicial procedure, as much an exercise in what the French call "l'histoire du droit" as an opportunity to observe in a novel way the resolution of some of the most pressing political problems in the Age of Louis XIV. But the overall aim is to understand the practical consequences of royal absolutism for the kingdom's highest judicial institutions.

Book Description
"Year of Sorrows draws upon an extensive array of archival sources to chronicle the famine crisis of 1709 in Lyon and its surrounding provinces." "Combining a traditional narrative of human struggle and desperate improvisation with contemporary analysis, Monahan takes his readers from the court of Versailles through the cities of Lyon into the hovels of French peasants who resisted the city's demand for their grain. Monahan goes on to analyze the political, social, economic, and demographic impact of the famine on an early modern city and explores the many conflicts created by the crisis between city and monarchy, city and countryside, and among various groups within Lyon. According to Monahan, the famine of 1709 serves as a prism to refract the interactions between royal finances and food shortages, between elites and the powerless, and between competing factions and power centers, and redefines the nature of the "absolute" monarchy of the Sun King." "This dynamic study of human struggle and its political and social dimensions sheds new light on a host of issues and problems in France before the Revolution and on the role that such crises have played in human history."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book Description
First published in French in 1974, David D. Bien's essay on the nature of nobility in old regime France pivoted around the 1781 "Ségur regulation" that required four generations of nobility for most officers entering the army. Once seen as a classic manifestation of the so-called "aristocratic reaction" against commoners, the loi Ségur, in Bien's deft analysis, instead emerges as a telling sign of tensions within an increasingly divided nobility. While exploding crude myths about class conflict and its causative role in the Revolution, Bien mounts a strong case for viewing eighteenth-century social tensions as the product of professional identity as much as social class. This study is presented here for the first time in English with a short preface by Rafe Blaufarb, and a wide-ranging introduction by Jay M. Smith that places Bien's work in the wider context of historical thinking over the past half-century on the origins of the French Revolution.
