Hypnosis is an interaction where a trance state of consciousness is induced and utilized to produce beneficial psychological and physiological changes by suggestions. Used since ancient times, today it is a scientific, highly effective treatment in medicine freed from authoritarian, manipulative and esoteric burden. It allows communication with the unconscious mind where otherwise unrecognized and are organized and regulated. A major advantage for patients is that after simple guidance they can use it themselves in the form of self-hypnosis. Moreover, in acute medicine such as emergencies or surgeries patients often enter a natural trance state all by itself making hypnotic induction dispensable and hypnotic communication easy and fundamental. However, the potential of hypnosis is yet widely unknown or underrepresented both in psychotherapy and somatic medicine. A deeper knowledge of clinical hypnosis and a wider distribution of relevant study results can bridge the historical living apart and bring back hypnosis to medicine. Hypnosis and suggestions provide a model to explain a wide variety of beneficial as well as harmful effects in medicine, and thus supplement the placebo/nocebo model. In addition, hypnosis and hypnotherapy opens interesting scientific insights into human brain functions, and into character and functioning of suggestions. The goal of leaving the very special setting of books and hypnosis journals and presenting hypnosis to a wide spectrum of readers in psychology and medicine is to increase its visibility, its impact and application. The application concerns both, the specific treatment of specific patients with specific complaints by an expert called hypnotherapy and the more general use of therapeutic hypnotic communication of health care personnel with all patients in all medical situations. On the other hand, hypnosis could benefit from a possible desirable stimulation of further research in this field.

In the early decades of the twentieth century, two intertwined changes began to shape the direction of German society. The baptism of the German film industry took place amid post-World War I conditions of political and social breakdown, and the cultural vacuum left by collapsing institutions was partially filled by moving images. At the same time, the emerging human sciences—psychiatry, neurology, sexology, eugenics, industrial psychology, and psychoanalysis—began to play an increasingly significant role in setting the terms for the way Germany analyzed itself and the problems it had inherited from its authoritarian past, the modernizing process, and war. Moreover, in advancing their professional and social goals, these sciences became heavily reliant on motion pictures. Situated at the intersection of film studies, the history of science and medicine, and the history of modern Germany, Homo Cinematicus connects the rise of cinema as a social institution to an inquiry into the history of knowledge production in the human sciences. Taking its title from a term coined in 1919 by commentator Wilhelm Stapel to identify a new social type that had been created by the emergence of cinema, Killen's book explores how a new class of experts in these new disciplines converged on the figure of the "homo cinematicus" and made him central to many of that era's major narratives and social policy initiatives. Killen traces film's use by the human sciences as a tool for producing, communicating, and popularizing new kinds of knowledge, as well as the ways that this alliance was challenged by popular films that interrogated the truth claims of both modern science and scientific cinema. In doing so, Homo Cinematicus endeavors to move beyond the divide between scientific and popular film, examining their historical coexistence and coevolution.

Silent cinema and contemporaneous literature explored themes of mesmerism, possession, and the ominous agency of corporate bodies that subsumed individual identities. At the same time, critics accused film itself of exerting a hypnotic influence over spellbound audiences. Stefan Andriopoulos shows that all this anxiety over being governed by an outside force was no marginal oddity, but rather a pervasive concern in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Tracing this preoccupation through the period’s films—as well as its legal, medical, and literary texts—Andriopoulos pays particular attention to the terrifying notion of murder committed against one’s will. He returns us to a time when medical researchers described the hypnotized subject as a medium who could be compelled to carry out violent crimes, and when films like The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari and Dr. Mabuse, the Gambler famously portrayed the hypnotist’s seemingly unlimited power on the movie screen.
