Book Description
Turbomachinery rotors, or bladed disks, are known to suffer from severe vibration problems due to small, random deviations (mistuning) of the blade properties. Mistuning can lead to dramatic increases in the maximum blade stress and cause high cycle fatigue (HCF), which is a major cost, readiness, and safety concern for the U.S. Air Force. The primary objective of this research was to provide significantly improved understanding, modeling, and prediction of the vibration response of mis-tuned bladed disk systems by including the effects of important phenomena that had been largely neglected in previous mistuning models. The models developed in this research program were used to investigate the interaction of blade mistuning with aerodynamic coupling, stage-to-stage connections for multistage rotors, blade damage, and nonlinearities. In addition, key mistuning phenomena were examined through vibration testing of blisks (single-piece bladed disks). New methods were developed for identifying blade mistuning parameters from test data and for running experimental Monte Carlo assessments of the effects of mistuning on the system forced response.

Book Description
A state-of-the-art facility has been developed for the experimental study of the vibratory response of bladed-disk assemblies. An Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry system provides real-time, full-field imaging of the vibration of a test specimen, while a Single Point Laser Vibrometer, mounted on a two-stage linear positioning assembly, provides high accuracy quantitative vibration measurements at any location on the surface of the specimen. Vibration of the test specimen is driven by a novel acoustic excitation system, which delivers a traveling-wave forcing to the blink specimen that replicates the excitation to which industrial bladed disks are subject. A 24-blade experimental blink (integral bladed disk) has been designed and manufactured to precision tolerances specifically for use in this experimental facility. The blink is nearly perfectly tuned but can be systematically mistuned in a controlled fashion in order to study mistuning phenomena. The setup has been shown to be extremely effective at rapidly identifying and accurately quantifying the complex vibration characteristics of blinks. The measurement capabilities provided with this unique facility will allow the dynamic behaviors in both tuned and mistuned configurations to be thoroughly documented and compared with predictions based on existing and developing theories of mistuning phenomena. This facility will also be used to develop a method for identifying the mistuning characteristics of industrial blinks.

Book Description
This research provides the framework to extend RFD to more realistic applications when the SDOF assumption breaks down, such as in cases of blade mistuning. Mistuning is inherently random; thus, a Monte Carlo analysis performed on a computationally cheap lumpedparameter model provides insight into RFD performance for various test parameters. Application of a genetic algorithm reduces the computational expense required to identify the optimal set of stiffness-state switches. This research also develops a low-order blisk model with blade-mounted piezoelectric patches as a tractable first step to apply RFD to more realistic systems. Application of a multi-objective optimization algorithm produces Pareto fronts that aid in the selection of the optimized patch parameters. Experimental tests utilizing the academic blisk with the optimized patches provides validation.
