Experimental Hematology Today-1985 is a memento to the superb 14th Annual Meeting of the International Society for Experimental Hematology, held in Jerusa lem, Israel in July 1985. It represents a selection of the best presentations at the meeting. The manuscripts were selected by the local scientific committee and care fully reviewed by the editors. The yearbook is divided into five parts and represents the most recent advances in the basic sciences and clinical applications. Part I, under the leadership of Dr. L.A. Rozenszajn, is entitled "Hematopoietic Regulators." Papers in this section discuss the most recent discoveries on the phys iological regulation of hematopoiesis. Part II, "Hematopoietic Microenvironment," introduced by Dr. J.S. Greenberger, deals with the involvement ofthe hematopoietic microenvironment in the control of hematopoiesis. Dr. M. Saito leads Part Ill, "Dif ferentiation of Normal and Leukemic Cells," while Part IV, "Leukemic Cells in Leukemogenesis," is introduced by Dr. A. Raghavacher. During the past decade, relatively few new studies have been initiated on the response of different species to high-dose, total-body irradia tion. For information on the LDSO/30d (the dose which produces 50 percent lethality within 30 days), one is generally referred to the older literature (e. g., Bond, Fliedner and Archambeau, 1965). Compari son of experimental data reveals considerable variations in LDSD values even after total-body irradiation with conventional X rays, ranging from 4 to 6 Gy in the monkey, 7.1 to 9 Gy in the rat and from 6.4 to 9 Gy in the mouse (see also Hall, 1978). Part of the discrepancy in the LDso values can possibly be attributed to inadequacies in the dosimetry procedures and exposure arrangements employed. As far as clinical experience is concerned, there is now an appreciable amount of information available about the effect of total body irradiation as a conditioning treatment for bone marrow transplan tation in patients suffering from leukaemia or aplastic anaemia. The results from different centres, including the incidence of complications such as radiation pneumonitis, are considerably different. This can part I y be connected with the application of different radiation sched ules: large single dose versus fractionated or protracted irradiation.

Much of the attention presently paid to leukemia is the result of recent progress in understanding and treatment. Chemotherapy of leukemia started in the late 1940s, and combination therapy evolved in the late 1950s. It was at that time that the clonality of leukemia was realized, after the discovery of chromosomal and then biochemical and immunological markers. And now we have the new data on retroviral and cellular oncogenes and the reports on human T -cell lymphoma/ leukemia viruses. Many more steps forward could be enumerated in a field which is so rapidly making the hematological textbooks outdated. In this volume, thirteen in-depth reviews from large multicenter trials in the Federal Republic of Germany summarize the current state of diagnosis and management of leukemias. Childhood ALL and AML adult ALL and AUL were investigated. While cure appears to be achievable for more and more patients with acute leukemia, we still pursue the aim of optimal palliation in chronic leukemias. The management of patients with leukemia therefore varies to a large extent in aggressiveness of therapy. In some situations, rescue from an otherwise lethal disease is provided by bone marrow transplanta tion, which is discussed in two chapters.

This book is the outcome of a meeting held in Davos, Switzerland, February 7-12, 1982 focused primarily on mononuclear phagocytes and on natural killer (NK) cells. This IX International RES Congress was attended by 489 scientists from 31 countries and there were 340 scientific presentations in oral or poster session. The essential purpose of the Congress was to bring together scientists representing various aspects of mononuclear phagocyte biology to review and examine cri~ically the effects and mechanisms of macrophage growth control as well as the participatio~ of these cells in the afferent and efferent limbs of the immune response. Additional topics included the production and distribution of mono nuclear phagocytes; the intrinsic and extrinsic regulation of these cells; and the origin, nature, function and regulation of NK cells. The ultimate goal of the Congress was to enhance communication between scientists in various countries and disciplines so that new research directives could be defined with which to explore basic aspects of macrophage and NK cell participation in the control of cancer and infection.
