Some Approaches to Statistical Analysis of a Weather Modification Experiment
Author: Ralph A. Bradley
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 53
Book Description
Data from a weather modification experiment are examined and a number of statistical analyses reported. The validity of earlier inferences is studied as are the utilities of various statistical methods. The experiment is described. The original analysis of North American Weather Consultants, who conducted the experiment, is reviewed. Data summarization is reported. A major approach to analysis is through the use of cloud-physics covariates in regression analyses. Finally, a multivariate analysis is discussed. It appears that the covariates may have been affected by treatment (cloud seeding) and that their use is invalid, not only reducing error variances but removing treatment effect. Some recommendations for improved design of similar future experiments are given in a concluding section, including preliminary trial use of blocking by storms. (Author).

Critical Issues in Weather Modification Research
Author: National Research Council
Publisher: National Academies Press
ISBN: 0309090539
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 144
Book Description
The weather on planet Earth is a vital and sometimes fatal force in human affairs. Efforts to control or reduce the harmful impacts of weather go back far in time. In this, the latest National Academies' assessment of weather modification, the committee was asked to assess the ability of current and proposed weather modification capabilities to provide beneficial impacts on water resource management and weather hazard mitigation. It examines new technologies, reviews advances in numerical modeling on the cloud and mesoscale, and considers how improvements in computer capabilities might be applied to weather modification. Critical Issues in Weather Modification Research examines the status of the science underlying weather modification in the United States. It calls for a coordinated national research program to answer fundamental questions about basic atmospheric processes and to address other issues that are impeding progress in weather modification.

Toward a Nonparametric Covariance Analysis of a Weather Modification Experiment
Author: R. J. Serfling
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Atmospheric temperature
Languages : en
Pages : 17
Book Description
A further analysis of the 1967-74 Santa Barbara weather modification experiment data is in progress in the Department of Statistics, Florida State University. The present report provides a nonparametric covariance analysis, of limited scope, of the Phase I experimental data. The findings tend to confirm, qualitatively, the North American Weather Consultants conclusions of a demonstrable seeding effect under selected conditions of cloud instability and cloud temperature. Quantitively, however, the present findings are more restrained. The analysis tends to suggest the need for improved experimental designs. (Author).
